  1. Limitations of PHP file uploads

In PHP, there are two parameters that can be used to control the limitations of file uploads: upload_max_filesize and post_max_size. Both parameters are settings in the PHP.ini file. Among them, the upload_max_filesize parameter is used to control the maximum upload file size of a single file; the post_max_size parameter is used to control the maximum size of the entire HTTP request.

For example, suppose your website requires uploading a 10MB file. Set upload_max_filesize to 10M in PHP.ini. If post_max_size is set to 20M, your application can upload multiple files smaller than 10M simultaneously, depending on how your code handles the upload request. However, if you need to upload a file larger than 20M, the application will not be able to handle the upload request.

  1. Nginx file upload restrictions

Nginx itself has no restrictions on file upload, but some configurations may affect file upload. For example, in Nginx, the client_max_body_size parameter is used to control the maximum size of client requests. If the request size exceeds this value, Nginx will return a 413 Request Entity Too Large error. By default, this value is 1M.

Solution

In order to upload and process files safely, it is best to set appropriate restrictions in PHP.ini and Nginx. In PHP, you can set the upload_max_filesize and post_max_size parameters in PHP.ini. You can also use the ini_set() function in a script to override settings in PHP.ini.

In Nginx, you can set the client_max_body_size parameter in the nginx.conf file. For example, to allow uploading files of 2GB, you can set this value to:

client_max_body_size 2G;
