Windows Server 2003, released in 2003, is widely used in enterprise-class server operating systems. As an old server system, you may encounter some problems when installing PHP, especially the installation speed is not as good as the new generation operating system. However, as long as you follow the following steps, you can successfully install on Windows Server 2003 php.

  1. Download and install Visual C Redistributable

Before installing php, you need to install Microsoft Visual C Redistributable. You can download the latest version from the Microsoft official website. After downloading, double-click to run the exe file and follow the prompts to complete the installation.

  1. Download php installation package

On the official website of php, you can find various versions and php installation packages for different operating systems. In order to install PHP in Windows Server 2003, you need to download a compatible version of PHP installation package. We recommend PHP version 5.2.17. Once the download is complete, unzip it to a location you can easily access.

In the unzipped folder, you will see a file named "php.ini". Open the file and modify it according to the following steps:

  • Find the "display_errors" field and change its value to "On" so that the error message can be displayed when an error occurs.
  • Find the "extension_dir" field and change its value to the path of the extension library on your computer. For example: extension_dir="C:\php\ext".
  • Find the "error_reporting" field and change its value to "E_ALL".

To enable php support in IIS, you need to configure it through the following steps:

  • Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  • Select the server name in the left panel.

  • Click "Add a new Web service extension". A dialog box will pop up, enter "PHP" as the name.
  • Click "Add...", in the pop-up dialog box, enter the path of the ISAPI extension, the path format should be "C:\php\php5isapi.dll" (if your PHP installation directory is different, please respond accordingly change path).
  • Select "Set extension status to Allowed".
  1. Test your installation

Before testing, you need to make sure that the default document of IIS contains index.php. The method is:

  • Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  • Select Web Sites in the left panel.
  • In the right panel, double-click the properties of the default Web site.
  • Add index.php in "Documents".
  • Click OK after confirming the changes.
