Epic urges judge to force Google to open its Play Store to more competition

Epic Games made the recommendation in a court filing Thursday before San Francisco District Judge James Donato, which would include allowing distribution on rival third-party app stores for six years and restricting Google. In December last year, Epic Games achieved a historic victory in its antitrust lawsuit against Google. The jury led by Donato unanimously ruled that Google had a monopoly position in the Play Store app store and in-app payment service Play Billing market and abused this position to cause harm to Epic Games.

Donato does not necessarily agree with this proposal from Epic Games. And there may yet be an uphill battle before any permanent order is issued against Google. But the new proposal sets up the next key test for Google's ability to exert control over app developers and consumers.

Steel defended itself against the jury's verdict and denied any wrongdoing. Google also said it would appeal the decision and could file a separate protest against any decision by Donato to reform, which could extend the case for years.

Google has a May 3 deadline to respond to Epic Games’ proposal.
