This pilot program, a collaboration between the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation), Ampere Computing, Equinix Metal, and Actuated, streamlines arm64 CI/CD for CNCF GitHub projects. The initiative addresses security concerns and performance limitations associated with self-hosting arm64 GitHub runners.

CNCF Arm64 Pilot: Impact and Insights

The solution leverages Actuated's microvM technology, providing isolated, ephemeral Docker instances for each build, significantly enhancing security. This approach, running on Ampere servers within Equinix Metal, has yielded impressive performance gains, with some projects reporting two to threefold faster build times compared to other architectures. Equinix Metal's enhanced observability further optimizes resource allocation.

CNCF Arm64 Pilot: Impact and Insights

The CNCF's adoption of this technology reflects its commitment to embracing cutting-edge architectures. The pilot's success simplifies arm64 builds, exemplified by the etcd project's reduction of 60 lines of complex build instructions to a single line.

Initially encompassing eight CNCF projects (seven actively participating), the pilot benefits projects like etcd, Fluent Bit, Containerd, Falco, Cilium, Tetragon, ebpf go library, CRI-O, Argo CD, and OpenTelemetry. These projects now enjoy improved arm64 support, faster build times, and more robust testing, often replacing slow emulation or infrequent builds with full integration tests on every commit. Cost savings are also anticipated, particularly for projects like Falco Security.

The collaboration highlights the advantages of Ampere's high core density processors for cloud-native development and resource efficiency. The pilot's success demonstrates a mutually beneficial outcome, providing CNCF projects with faster, more secure, and cost-effective arm64 resources.
