How to add line breaks to Excel cells

Adding line breaks to cells in Excel is very easy, just follow these steps:

1. Select cells: Click the cell where you want to add a line break to make it the active cell.

2. Enter text: Enter the text you want to display in the cell.

3. Press Alt Enter: After typing the text, hold down the Alt key and press Enter. This adds a newline character to the text, creating a new line.

4. Repeat steps 2-3: If you need to create more rows in the cell, just repeat steps 2 and 3, enter text in each new row and press Alt Enter.

Note:

  • If the cell already contains text, pressing Alt Enter will move the cursor to a new line instead of adding a newline character.
  • To remove a newline character, use the Find and Replace function (Ctrl H) to replace the newline character (Alt 010) with a null value.
  • Line breaks are only visible in the current cell. If the cell is copied and pasted into other cells, line breaks will not be preserved.
