According to "Financial Eleven", a person familiar with the matter revealed that ByteDance is in contact with Alibaba to discuss the acquisition of Ele.me. However, it is still in the negotiation stage and no final agreement has been reached.
According to reports, in December 2023, there was news that Byte would acquire Ele.me for about US$7 billion (about 50.26 billion yuan), but both parties later publicly denied the news.
A person close to Ele.me said that senior executives of Byte and Ele.me had a meeting years ago. This meeting left two points of disagreement: First, the acquisition price: Byte’s bid is US$7 billion, and Ali’s expected price is US$7.5 billion (currently about 53.85 billion yuan) – US$8 billion (currently about 53.85 billion yuan) 57.44 billion yuan).
The second is the acquisition form: Byte hopes to retain only Ele.me’s instant delivery team, which will be responsible for undertaking orders for Douyin’s local life business. Alibaba hopes that Byte can take over the entire Ele.me team, and then Byte will lay off any unnecessary personnel.
This site noticed that Douyin, a subsidiary of ByteDance, reached cooperation with Ele.me as early as August 2022. The two parties stated at the time that they would work together to explore new scenarios for upgrading local life services, deeply connect merchants and consumers through high-quality content, rich products and efficient logistics and distribution, and bring "instant viewing, instant viewing" in the video era. A new local life experience of “click and reach”.
According to the cooperation, Ele.me will be based on the Douyin open platform and use mini programs as a carrier to work with Douyin through rich product scenarios and technical capabilities to help millions of merchants serve 600 million Douyin users. Yinrihuo usersprovide local life services from content planting, online ordering to instant delivery. Both parties will jointly invest more innovative resources to support the development of local lifestyle businesses and better meet the immediate needs of consumers in urban life.
In response, Ele.me insiders said: The cooperation between the two parties has been steadily advancing, but the so-called "acquisition" is completely nonsense. Douyin insiders responded: Bloomberg has no such report, and Douyin has no such plan. Related reading:
