Volvo announced on June 28 that it became the first European automaker to support Tesla charging standards. According to Volvo's official announcement, the company has reached an agreement with Tesla similar to that of other car manufacturers. In the future, Volvo's electric car users will be able to use the 12,000 super charging stations built by Tesla around the world. This milestone is seen as an important step for Tesla’s charging standards to be recognized by multiple car manufacturers and charging station operators.

For Volvo electric vehicles that are currently on the market or will soon be on the market, including XC40 and C40 Recharge, EX30 and EX90, Volvo will offer a Tesla Charging Standard (NACS) to Current Charging Standard (CCS) adapter in mid-2024. This will make Tesla’s charging facilities more convenient for Volvo owners.

According to the author’s understanding, well-known car manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors and Rivian have already expressed their approval of Tesla’s charging standards. Tesla’s charging standard is expected to promote the development and unification of the electric vehicle industry and gradually replace the currently widely used charging standard CCS. Major automakers have joined Tesla's charging standards camp to expand choice and convenience in electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

For consumers, Volvo’s decision will give them more flexibility in choosing charging methods, whether using Volvo’s own charging facilities or Tesla’s Supercharging stations. This will further promote the development of the electric vehicle market, increase users' charging options, and improve the convenience and popularity of electric vehicles.

Although Tesla's charging standards have been widely recognized in the industry, further promotion and standardization are still needed to ensure that electric vehicles of different brands are better compatible with various charging facilities. As more and more car manufacturers join the Tesla charging standard camp, we have reason to believe that the charging infrastructure in the electric vehicle industry will gradually be unified and bring a better charging experience to users.
