News on June 9th, Apple launched a new Mac Pro at the WWDC 2023 conference today, equipped with M2 Ultra chip, which marks the completion of Apple's transition from Intel to Apple's own chips. According to the editor's understanding, Apple also announced that the macOS update released next year will no longer support Intel Macs.
The Apple Silicon program has been underway for a year since Apple launched the M1 chip in November 2020. The transition was originally planned to be completed within two years, but has been delayed for various reasons.
According to the editor, the latest report from foreign media 9to5Mac shows that Apple’s upcoming macOS update will no longer support Intel Macs. In other words, some users may miss out on Apple's latest features and optimizations because they won't be available in future OS versions.
Specifically, Apple will no longer provide support for macOS Sonoma (assumed to be the next macOS version) for the following Intel Mac models: 2017 iMac Pro, 2018 Mac mini, 2018 MacBook Air, 2018 MacBook Pro, 2019 MacBook Air, 2019 MacBook Pro, 2019 iMac, 2019 Mac Pro, 2020 MacBook Air, and 2020 MacBook Pro and iMac.
Apple’s 2024 macOS version update will be the last supported version of Intel Macs. When considering future hardware upgrades, users should choose carefully and understand whether their devices can adapt to the overall shift towards Apple's own chips.
With three years having passed since Apple released the M1 chip, many early Intel Mac devices may not be able to be upgraded to future macOS 15 versions. According to analysis, the 2017 iMac Pro, 2018 Mac mini, and most 2019 Mac devices will not be able to enjoy the new features and performance optimizations of macOS 15. However, the 2019 Mac Pro and 2020 Mac devices will enjoy another year of support, until 2025, and macOS 15 will be their last supported version.
