News on May 26, according to the latest research data released by TrendForce, in the first quarter of 2023, the total revenue of the global DRAM memory industry was approximately US$9.66 billion, a decrease of 21.2% from the previous quarter, continuing three consecutive quarters of decline. trend.

The three major memory manufacturers have not been spared in this downturn. Samsung's revenue was approximately US$41.7 billion, and its market share dropped to 43.2%, a decrease of 24.7% from the previous month. Supply order restrictions are the main reason for the decline in Samsung's own brand mobile phone shipments and average selling prices.

Micron’s market share increased to 28.2%, with revenue of approximately US$2.72 billion in the same period last year, a decrease of 3.8% month-on-month. Driven by shipment orders at the end of last year, Micron became the only one among the three major memory manufacturers to show positive growth in shipments, although the financial report statistics cycle is relatively early.

SK Hynix’s revenue was approximately US$2.31 billion, with its share falling to 23.9%, a sharp drop of 31.7%, the highest decline among the three major memory manufacturers. Shipments and average selling prices both fell by more than 15%.

According to the editor’s understanding, due to the rapid decline in average selling prices, the first-quarter operating profits of the three major memory manufacturers have turned from positive to negative. With DRAM prices continuing to decline, operating profits in the second quarter are expected to will still be a negative value.

In order to cope with this situation, the three major manufacturers have launched production reduction measures, and the equipment idle rates have increased to 23%, 26% and 18% respectively.

Nanya’s shipments among Taiwanese manufacturers have declined for four consecutive quarters. Revenue decreased by 16.7% in the first quarter, but its market share has increased to 2.2%. Since the 1Anm process has not yet been mass-produced and the mainstream is still stuck at 20nm, Nanya's operating profit dropped to -44.9%, but the equipment idle rate is expected to drop from 30% to 20%.

Winbond’s revenue decreased by 8.8%, but its share increased to 1.0%. Among them, orders for notebook computers and TVs performed well, but demand for automobiles and networks was weak.

Power Semiconductor's revenue fell by 12.3%, and when including foundry, it fell sharply by 22.6%, mainly due to falling prices and weak demand.

The oversupply situation in the DRAM memory industry has not improved and prices have been falling. This is the view of TrendForce. Although shipments are expected to increase in the second quarter, revenue growth will be very limited due to price declines.

Looking forward to the second half of the year, as original manufacturers continue to reduce production, the decline in DRAM prices is expected to gradually converge, but a recovery is still far away.
