HomeBackend DevelopmentPHP ProblemSeveral ways to run php

With the rapid development of the Internet, PHP has become the choice of many developers. PHP is a widely used open source language, which is mainly used for web development. When writing code for a web application, you need some way to run your PHP code. This article will introduce several operating methods of PHP, allowing developers to understand their advantages and disadvantages and better choose the method that suits their development needs.

  1. Running PHP from the command line

Running PHP from the command line is one of the simplest ways. It is suitable for applications that do not require interaction with a web server, browser, or other web applications. Just open a terminal and enter the "php" command. For example:

php -r 'echo "Hello, world!";'

This will output "Hello, world!". Additionally, you can specify PHP files at runtime. For example:

php my_program.php

The command line mode is very convenient to run PHP, but it cannot interact with the Web server, so it is not suitable for applications that need to dynamically generate Web pages.

  1. Running PHP in module mode

Apache server is one of the most popular web servers at present. If you want to use PHP with Apache, you need to install the PHP module . After successful installation, PHP scripts can be used with web browsers. The Apache server will automatically send the request to the PHP module for processing. The advantage of running PHP in module mode is that it is very fast and easy to deploy; the disadvantage is that it cannot be set independently for each PHP file, so it may not be flexible enough.

  1. Running PHP in CGI mode

In CGI mode, PHP scripts are called and executed by the web server. When the browser sends a PHP request, the web server calls the PHP interpreter to parse the PHP file and sends it back to the browser after processing the request. The advantage of running PHP in CGI is high reliability and maintainability, because each PHP file can be configured individually; the disadvantage is that CGI is slower than other methods, because each request requires starting and shutting down the PHP process. At the same time, CGI may also take up too many server resources when handling a large number of requests.

  1. FastCGI way to run PHP

FastCGI is very similar to CGI, but it can reuse the interpreter process, thus processing requests faster. FastCGI is a highly scalable CGI method that supports multiple processes running at the same time. Under FastCGI, the interpreter process (PHP-FPM) runs as a separate service with which the web server communicates and returns its processing results to the browser. The advantage of running PHP in FastCGI mode is that it is faster. At the same time, the number of processes can be adjusted by changing the process configuration file to adapt to the needs of concurrent request processing. But be aware that if configured incorrectly, it may take up more system resources.

Summary

PHP is a very popular development language that can easily implement data processing and presentation in web applications. Different PHP running methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Developers can understand their characteristics and choose the method that suits them best. No matter which method you choose, it needs to be properly tuned and configured to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
