Microsoft confirmed over the weekend that some Windows 10 devices may experience a blue screen of death (BSOD) with the 0xc000021a error. The Redmond company reports that the issue is caused by the KB5021233 cumulative update released during the December 2022 Patch Tuesday.
"After installing KB5021233, the versions of the hidparse.sys file in c:/windows/system32 and c:/windows/system32/drivers may not match (assuming Windows is installed to your C: drive) , which may cause verification to fail when signature sanitization occurs," Microsoft said in its document, detailing the technical details of the issue.
Blue screens only affect client Windows 10 versions, such as Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H1; and Windows 10, version 20H2.
Currently, there is no permanent solution, but Microsoft assures customers that it is already working on a fix. Additionally, it provides a workaround that involves using the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to perform a set of steps. Additionally, Microsoft says it's important to follow them and not recommend others online. "We do not recommend deleting hidparse.sys from the Windows\System32 folder," Microsoft added.
#You will need to enter the Windows Recovery Environment. If your device does not automatically boot into WinRE, see Entry Points into WinRE.
Select the Troubleshoot button.
Select the "Launch Recovery, Troubleshooting and Diagnostic Tools" button.
Select the "Advanced Options" button.
If necessary, select the Command Prompt button and wait for your device to restart.
Your device should reboot into a command prompt window. You may need to log into your device with a password before entering the command prompt window.
Run the following command (Important: If Windows is not installed to C:\windows, you will need to modify the command to your environment) : xcopy C:\windows\system32\drivers\hidparse.sys C:\windows\\system32\hidden parser
on After a command is completed, type: exit
## Select the Continue button.
Windows should now start as expected.
