In the Linux operating system, installing PHP is a very important task. PHP is a popular server-side scripting language that is widely used in web application development. In this article, we will introduce how to quickly install PHP on Linux systems.

Installing PHP

Here are the steps to install PHP on different Linux distributions:

Ubuntu/Debian:

  1. Open a terminal and switch to superuser:

    sudo su
  2. Update the local package list:

    apt-get update
  3. Install PHP and related extensions :

    apt-get install php php-mysql
  4. Check if PHP is successfully installed:

    php -v

CentOS/Fedora:

  1. Open Terminal and switch to superuser:

    sudo su
  2. Install the EPEL source, which contains PHP:

    yum install epel-release
  3. Install PHP and related extensions:

    yum install php php-mysql

Other Linux distributions:

For other Linux distributions, please check Related documentation to learn how to install PHP. PHP can usually be found in your distribution's package manager.

Configuring PHP

Once PHP is successfully installed, we still need to configure it some. Here is a simple example of a configuration file:

sudo nano /etc/php/7.0/apache2/php.ini

You can change the file name depending on the version of PHP you are using and the type of web server.

The following are some common settings for PHP configuration files:

  • display_errors = On: Output PHP errors to the browser.
  • error_reporting = E_ALL: Causes PHP to throw all errors.
  • upload_max_filesize = 10M: Allows uploading files up to 10MB.
  • post_max_size = 10M: Set the maximum post data to 10MB.

Install PHP extensions

PHP supports many extensions (such as gd, xml, mysql, mysqli, etc.). If you need to use some extensions for PHP, please follow these steps to install them:

  1. Open a terminal and switch to superuser:

    sudo su
  2. Install the required extensions:

    apt-get install php-<extension></extension>
  3. Restart the web server:

    service apache2 restart

Note: We only use apt-get command to install here Extension, since Ubuntu and Debian use the APT package manager. If you are using another Linux distribution, you will need to check the relevant documentation for installation steps for the extension.

Conclusion

It is not difficult to install PHP in a Linux system, it only requires a few simple commands. After installing PHP, you still need to configure it and install some necessary extensions. If you have special needs, please refer to the relevant documentation to help you better configure and use PHP.
