WPS was born in 1988 by Qiu Bojun, a 24-year-old young man, earlier than Microsoft Office.
As early as the DOS era, WPS occupied the Chinese market long before Office, which was not yet born. At that time, almost all print shops used WPS typesetting software. At that time, very few people in China had access to computers. Although he was famous in the field of text typesetting and printing, it was limited to this. Qiu Bojun did not have it at that time. I thought that in the rapid development of personal PCs, cultivating a large number of new users was really a major mistake. If it had decisively cooperated with government departments and promoted WPS, Microsoft Office would not have been as successful as it is today.
In 1996, Microsoft took the initiative to come to Kingsoft. Microsoft hoped that Kingsoft would share the WPS format with Microsoft and make the two compatible with each other. Then, the two parties signed an agreement-both parties would read each other's files through the middle layer RTF format of their own software.
The opening of the WPS format to Microsoft means that original WPS users can use Microsoft Word to open and edit WPS format documents. At the same time, WPS can also open and edit documents in Office format.
It is this seemingly simple hope and requirement that allowed Microsoft to seize the Chinese market with almost no effort. The first thing Microsoft did when entering China was to find a way to transfer old WPS users to the Word platform. Microsoft did a good job in publicity, and used bundled sales and condoned piracy (because personal use of piracy is not illegal), quickly occupied China's market share, and almost put Kingsoft into bankruptcy.
Lei Jun was forced to tear down all WPS code and redesign WPS, which in turn was compatible with Microsoft. In August 2002, when Lei Jun proposed to Qiu Bojun that he would rewrite WPS with 35 million yuan in three years, Qiu Bojun agreed after being silent.
On September 12, 2005, the new version of WPS was launched and announced that it would be permanently free for individuals. This is the first compromise of WPS. Its relationship with the old WPS may be limited to the continuation of the same name. This version of WPS does not use a single line of code from the old WPS. It is completely rebuilt from scratch and fully adopts Microsoft Office standards. The goal is to achieve the compatibility effect of "no missing word, no missing line, no missing page". The software interface and functions are exactly the same, and technologically superior. Since 2012, WPS has begun to use the Qt framework for development, becoming the world's first cross-platform office software, supporting all mainstream platforms of Windows, Linux, Android, and IOS.
It is worth noting that it is also because of the original agreement that no matter how Kingsoft software is modified, even if it 100% imitates Office, Microsoft cannot sue it for infringement because the two use different technologies. Technology is different.
If it’s a format issue, there is a format sharing agreement between them. If we talk about other things, although the functions implemented by office software are similar, if the actual code is different, it cannot constitute an infringement of Microsoft computer software copyright.
