Comparison of mod_php, FastCGI, PHP-FPM and other PHP running methods

This article mainly introduces the comparison of mod_php, FastCGI, PHP-FPM and other PHP running methods. What does this article explain? It is the advantages and disadvantages of PHP handlers, mod_php, the advantages and disadvantages of FastCGI, the advantages and disadvantages of PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager), etc. Friends who need it can refer to it

Overview

I wrote this article because today I want to build an LNMP environment under Ubuntu. Nginx uses PHP-FPM, so I have sorted out the interaction between the web server and the PHP interpreter.

As we all know, PHP is a cross-platform and cross-server language, which is one of the reasons why it is so popular. However, not many people know that the PHP interpreter can run in a web server in different ways. The most commonly used way for PHP is to run in Apache as a module (mod_php), which is also the default way for Apache to run PHP. But in Nginx, Nginx uses PHP-FPM.

This article will introduce these concepts. If there is something wrong, please criticize and give me some advice.

What are PHP handlers?

The first thing to remember is that any kind of web server (Apache, Nginx, etc.) is designed to send static resources such as HTML and pictures to users. The web server itself cannot interpret any dynamic scripts (PHP, Python, etc.) wait). The PHP processor is used to interpret the PHP code in the web application, interpret it as HTML or other static resources, and then pass the parsed results to the web server, and finally the web server sends it to the user. Most web servers cannot parse PHP code, so it needs a program that can parse PHP code. This is a PHP processor.

mod_php

First, let’s take a look at running PHP as an Apache module. mod_php is now available in the software repositories of all Linux versions, so it is easy to install.

When PHP runs in Apache as a module, the PHP interpreter is "embedded" in the Apache process. Apache will not call any external PHP process, so this method allows Apache and PHP to communicate better. However, when running PHP in this way, even if Apache only provides static resources (such as HTML), each child process of Apache will load mod_php, resulting in more memory overhead than normal.

Another drawback to running this way is that it only works with Apache. In addition, this method is not suitable for small VPS and large websites, because large websites may have many static resources, and these static resources do not need to be interpreted by the PHP program.

Advantages:

 1. Easy to install and update

 2. Capacity configuration

Disadvantages:

 1. Only works with Apache

2. Increased the memory overhead of Apache sub-process

3. After changing the php.ini file, you need to restart Apache

FastCGI

FastCGI is a common protocol interface between interactive programs and web servers. It is a variant of early CGI (Common Gateway Interface). Compared with CGI, FastCGI reduces the cost of interacting with the Web server and can handle more requests at a time.

Apache can use FastCGI in the form of mod_fcgid. Other web servers such as lighttpd, nginx, Cherokee, and even Microsoft's IIS can also use FastCGI. With FastCGI, multiple versions of PHP can be set up simultaneously, which can be very useful in certain situations.

FastCGI also uses suexec to support different users using their own instances of PHP. This feature is especially important for improving security in shared environments. FastCGI not only ensures performance, but also reduces the memory overhead of the web server.

Advantages:

 1. Compatible with most web servers

2. It takes up less memory than mod_php

3. More configuration items, including multiple versions of PHP and suexec

Disadvantages

1. Complex configuration

2. Not well known by everyone

PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager)

PHP-FPM is the latest way for web servers to use PHP, and it is also another implementation of PHP FastCGI. PHP-FPM is very useful for web applications running on small VPS and multiple servers. At the same time, it can also be used by any Web server that is compatible with FastCGI.

PHP-FPM enables administrators to gracefully stop and start PHP worker processes without losing any queries. This allows us to incrementally update the configuration and binaries without losing any queries. It also allows us to emergency restart the process in case of any unexpected corruption.

Advantages:

 1. Compatible with most web servers

2. It takes up less memory than mod_php

3. More configuration items, including multiple versions of PHP and suexec

Disadvantages

1. Complex configuration

2. Not well known by everyone

Supplement: Four ways for Apache to run PHP

mod_php (DSO, Dynamic Shared Object)

CGI

How can you protect against Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks related to sessions? How can you protect against Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks related to sessions?Apr 23, 2025 am 12:16 AM

To protect the application from session-related XSS attacks, the following measures are required: 1. Set the HttpOnly and Secure flags to protect the session cookies. 2. Export codes for all user inputs. 3. Implement content security policy (CSP) to limit script sources. Through these policies, session-related XSS attacks can be effectively protected and user data can be ensured.

Methods to optimize PHP session performance include: 1. Delay session start, 2. Use database to store sessions, 3. Compress session data, 4. Manage session life cycle, and 5. Implement session sharing. These strategies can significantly improve the efficiency of applications in high concurrency environments.

How do you configure the session name in PHP?How do you configure the session name in PHP?Apr 23, 2025 am 12:08 AM

In PHP, you can use the session_name() function to configure the session name. The specific steps are as follows: 1. Use the session_name() function to set the session name, such as session_name("my_session"). 2. After setting the session name, call session_start() to start the session. Configuring session names can avoid session data conflicts between multiple applications and enhance security, but pay attention to the uniqueness, security, length and setting timing of session names.

How often should you regenerate session IDs?How often should you regenerate session IDs?Apr 23, 2025 am 12:03 AM

The session ID should be regenerated regularly at login, before sensitive operations, and every 30 minutes. 1. Regenerate the session ID when logging in to prevent session fixed attacks. 2. Regenerate before sensitive operations to improve safety. 3. Regular regeneration reduces long-term utilization risks, but the user experience needs to be weighed.

How do you set the session cookie parameters in PHP?How do you set the session cookie parameters in PHP?Apr 22, 2025 pm 05:33 PM

Setting session cookie parameters in PHP can be achieved through the session_set_cookie_params() function. 1) Use this function to set parameters, such as expiration time, path, domain name, security flag, etc.; 2) Call session_start() to make the parameters take effect; 3) Dynamically adjust parameters according to needs, such as user login status; 4) Pay attention to setting secure and httponly flags to improve security.

What is the main purpose of using sessions in PHP?What is the main purpose of using sessions in PHP?Apr 22, 2025 pm 05:25 PM

The main purpose of using sessions in PHP is to maintain the status of the user between different pages. 1) The session is started through the session_start() function, creating a unique session ID and storing it in the user cookie. 2) Session data is saved on the server, allowing data to be passed between different requests, such as login status and shopping cart content.

How can you share sessions across subdomains? How can you share sessions across subdomains?Apr 22, 2025 pm 05:21 PM

How to share a session between subdomains? Implemented by setting session cookies for common domain names. 1. Set the domain of the session cookie to .example.com on the server side. 2. Choose the appropriate session storage method, such as memory, database or distributed cache. 3. Pass the session ID through cookies, and the server retrieves and updates the session data based on the ID.
