Apple Just Added Sudoku to Apple News — Here's How to Play It on iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Apple News users on iPhone, iPad, and Mac now have a new game: Sudoku! This classic puzzle joins Crossword, Crossword Mini, and Quartiles in the News app's Puzzles section, thanks to recent software updates.
Access is limited to paying Apple News subscribers in Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US. News is available as a standalone subscription or bundled in the Apple One Premier package. Non-subscribers might get a limited free trial.
To play, you'll need iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS Sequoia 15.2 (released December 11th). Older software versions won't display puzzles but might show leaderboards.
Finding Sudoku Puzzles:
Several ways exist to locate Sudoku puzzles within the News app:
- On the Today tab's Puzzles section, tap "Latest Puzzles" or "More Puzzles" to access News Puzzles, then select a recent Sudoku game or "Sudoku" for all available puzzles.
- Directly tap a Sudoku puzzle on the Today tab's Puzzles section to launch the latest game.
- In the Following tab, tap "Puzzles" to access News Puzzles, then choose a recent game or select "Sudoku" for the full list.
- Tap "Sudoku" in the Following tab to view all available puzzles.
The News Puzzles page lets you select today's Sudoku or tap "Sudoku" to access daily puzzles and an archive. Within the News Sudoku page, scroll down and tap "Archive" or the More (•••) button, then "Sudoku Archive," to view more puzzles.
Filter options allow refining your search. Use the Filter button to sort by date (newest or oldest), filter by play status (Any, Unplayed, In Progress, Complete), and select difficulty (Any, Easy, Moderate, Challenging).
Sudoku Rules & Gameplay:
A quick tutorial explains the game upon launch. The goal is to fill each 3x3 block, row, and column with the numbers 1 through 9 without repetition.
Use "Pen" or "Notes" mode on the keypad to input numbers. Holding a number in Notes mode directly enters it as an answer. Tapping an answered number highlights matching answers and notes. Incorrectly placed numbers gray out on the keypad.
After winning, share the game or check leaderboards. Tap "Done" to return to the puzzle or "More Puzzles" for more games.
The Gameplay button toggles features: Show Conflicts, Autocheck, Responsive Notes, Autofill Notes, and Hide Notes. Hints are available via the question mark (?) at the bottom. Other options include Check Square, Check Puzzle, Reveal (which doesn't count towards stats), and Clear Puzzle.
The More (•••) button accesses settings to control the timer, highlight matching numbers, and permanently enable/disable Show Conflicts, Autocheck, and Responsive Notes.
Leaderboards show your Game Center friends' and global scores. Your Scorecard displays your streak, solve rate, and solve times.

mPDF is a PHP library that can generate PDF files from UTF-8 encoded HTML. The original author, Ian Back, wrote mPDF to output PDF files "on the fly" from his website and handle different languages. It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements. Supports almost all languages, including RTL (Arabic and Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Supports nested block-level elements (such as P, DIV),
