Apple Intelligence: A Disappointing AI Assistant
I was initially excited about Apple Intelligence, especially after Apple's misleading advertisement promised a revolutionary AI-powered Siri. I rigorously tested it across my devices, hoping for improvement with each update. However, I've concluded that Apple Intelligence, in its current state, significantly underperforms its competitors and isn't worth the storage space and battery drain. I've happily disabled it, opting for dedicated apps instead. Here's why:
Image Generation Features Fall Short
Image Playground, the feature I anticipated most, proved incredibly disappointing. Compared to robust alternatives like Grok, its image generation capabilities are severely lacking. The output is consistently unimpressive, with limited visual variety and excruciatingly slow rendering times, even for simple prompts.
The non-standard, counter-intuitive interface further detracts from the user experience. The need to swipe repeatedly while waiting for image generation is cumbersome. Free alternatives like OpenAI's GPT-4 image generation in ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Meta AI offer far superior results. Image Playground feels like a rudimentary version of these more powerful tools.
Genmoji and Image Wand, sharing the same underlying AI model, are equally underwhelming.
Writing Tools: Useful, but Not Worth the Overhead
The Writing Tools, offering proofreading, grammar checking, and text rewriting, are the only features I used regularly. While helpful, their integration into the keyboard comes at the cost of significant battery drain. ChatGPT provides superior capabilities, but the convenience of integrated tools sometimes outweighs switching between apps.
Visual Intelligence: A Google Lens Clone
Visual Intelligence, relying on Google for web searches and ChatGPT for image analysis, feels incomplete. While it offers some useful features like text detection, it's essentially a less capable version of Google Lens.
Other Issues
Notification summaries are unreliable and often misrepresent information. Siri's performance has, in my experience, worsened, with increased instances of misunderstandings. The promised AI-enhanced Siri remains delayed, leaving its current functionality redundant given the availability of ChatGPT.
Minor Improvements, Major Disappointment
While some minor features like improved Photos search and the Reduce Interruptions focus mode are beneficial, they don't justify the overall shortcomings of Apple Intelligence.
Replacing Apple Intelligence
I've successfully replaced Apple Intelligence's functionality with dedicated apps. ChatGPT provides superior text processing and image generation. The only advantage of Apple Intelligence is its native integration, but this is outweighed by its performance issues and battery drain.
Conclusion
Apple Intelligence is a significant disappointment. Its subpar performance and misleading marketing have damaged Apple's reputation. I will not re-enable it until substantial improvements are made.
