Mac keyboard locking guide: How to lock keyboard for cleaning or other purposes
Your Mac keyboard is dirty, especially if you eat while using your laptop. My keyboard is always covered with debris and I often need to clean it. But, exactly how do you lock your Mac keyboard for cleaning—or for any other reason?
This article will explain why you may need to lock your MacBook keyboard, how you can use it, and how to unlock it later.
Can you lock your MacBook keyboard?
Unfortunately, there is no dedicated keyboard lock button on your Mac, so you can't easily lock the Mac keyboard for cleaning.
Many different Mac keyboard shortcuts are suitable for all Macs, whether you have a MacBook Air or Pro, iMac or other Apple computers. However, none of these shortcuts can lock your keyboard.
Luckily, there are other ways to temporarily disable the MacBook keyboard.
Why do you need to lock your MacBook keyboard?
You may need to lock the Mac keyboard for cleaning so that you don't accidentally press the keys. If you are carrying your MacBook, or if you have a kid or pet that may sit on it, press a key or otherwise mess with the keyboard, you may also want to protect your keyboard.
If you are cleaning the appearance of your MacBook, iMac, or other Apple computer, you should also remember to clean up the junk files inside. MacKeeper's Safe Cleanup can help you here, finding and deleting unwanted files in just a few clicks.
Whether you want to delete unnecessary language files, cache or log files, or email attachments, Safe Cleanup can help. It can have a huge impact – I was able to find and delete 4.78GB of junk files on my MacBook!
The following is how to clean your Mac:
- Open MacKeeper and select Safe Cleanup from the sidebar.
- Click to start scanning.
- After the scan is complete, check the file you want to delete and select Clear junk file.
How to lock the keyboard on your Mac
While there is no one-click solution to lock the MacBook keyboard, there are other ways to avoid accidental typing. You can lock the MacBook's screen, log out of your user account completely, or set the hot corner for quick locking. If you use a Bluetooth keyboard, you can disconnect, or you can use a third-party tool to lock the keyboard only.
1. Lock Mac screen
While it won't lock the MacBook keyboard, locking the screen prevents unnecessary input. If you want to clean your keyboard or avoid others using your MacBook, this may be the right choice. This is probably the easiest solution – this is one method I use often.
To lock the screen, go to Apple menu>Lock the screen.
2. Completely cancelled
The process of fully logging out is very similar to simply locking the screen. However, when you log out, your Mac will close the apps and documents for you. This means that logging out and re-login may take longer than just locking and unlocking the screen.
To log out on Mac:
- Go to Apple menu.
- Click Log out [Username].
3. Enable the hot angle for the lock screen
Hot angle is a feature of macOS that allows you to initiate an action when you move the cursor to the corner of the screen. You can also set it to automatically lock the screen.
Here is how to enable hot corners on your MacBook:
- Go to Apple menu> System settings.
- Click on the Desktop and dock in the sidebar.
- Scroll down and click Hot angle .
- Select the corner you want to use and select Lock screen from the drop-down menu. Click to finish .
4. Turn off the Bluetooth keyboard
If you use a Bluetooth keyboard, you can simply turn it off or unpair it for cleaning. Depending on the keyboard model, the device itself may have a turn-off switch, or you may need to use your Mac's Bluetooth settings.
The following is how to disconnect the Bluetooth device:
- Go to Apple menu> System settings.
- Click Bluetooth in the sidebar and find your keyboard in the My Devices list.
- Hoom the mouse over the device you want to disconnect and click the Disconnect button.
5. Use third-party tools
There are some available third-party applications that can lock the keyboard for you.
Before downloading a new app, remember to search for real user reviews. Download only reputable apps that can be downloaded from the App Store or directly from the developer's website.
6. Use keyboard shortcuts
If you are like me, you are always looking for keyboard shortcuts to do things faster. As I mentioned, there are no keyboard shortcuts to lock the MacBook keyboard, but you can use keyboard shortcuts to lock the screen.
Simply press Command Control Q to lock the screen on your Mac.
The keyboard shortcuts can do various other things as well. Learn how to use keyboard shortcuts to display special characters on your Mac keyboard.

Now you know how to lock your Mac keyboard for cleaning—or at least how to lock the screen—you also need to know how to unlock it.
Luckily, this is very simple. If you follow the instructions to lock the screen or log out of the user account, you just need to log in again.
To unlock your MacBook:
- Click your Username. If you have multiple users, you may need to move the cursor to Visible User to display more users.
- If you set a password, please enter your password. Or, if you enable Touch ID, you can touch the sensor to log in again.
Conclusion
Unfortunately, there is no built-in way to easily lock the Mac keyboard for cleaning—or for any other reason. You can download third-party software to temporarily disable the keyboard or trackpad, but there are other solutions.
Personally, I prefer to simply lock my screen, using Apple menus or keyboard shortcuts.
While you are cleaning the outside of your MacBook, iMac, or other Apple computer, remember that you should also pay attention to macOS maintenance. MacKeeper's Safe Cleanup can support you in doing this, helping you clear unnecessary junk files, provide you with more storage space, and help your Mac run smoothly.

mPDF is a PHP library that can generate PDF files from UTF-8 encoded HTML. The original author, Ian Back, wrote mPDF to output PDF files "on the fly" from his website and handle different languages. It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements.
