This website reported on July 23 that according to Omdia’s latest "Large-size Display Panel Market Tracking Report for the First Quarter of 2024", shipments of large-size OLEDs above 9 inches in 2024 are expected to increase by 124.6% year-on-year. The report shows that due to the global economic recession, demand for high-end display panels has declined, resulting in large-size OLED shipments falling by 25.7% year-on-year in 2023. The only exception is OLED displays, which provides an opportunity for panel manufacturers to shift their focus and offset losses in the OLED TV display panel business to achieve shipment growth in 2023.
1. In response to market changes, Peter Su, senior principal analyst of Omdia Display Research, pointed out:As shown in the figure, except for the "other" category, shipments of all large-size OLED applications are expected to be in 2024 year growth. This growth will be driven by OLED’s mobile PC applications such as laptops and tablets.
It is particularly worth mentioning that tablet OLED shipments are expected to increase by 294.0% year-on-year in 2024, mainly due to the launch of the new Apple iPad Pro OLED version. OLED makers also plan to increase notebook OLED shipments by 152.6% year-on-year during the same period.
Su Jinguan also mentioned:
As the demand for AI PCs continues to grow, the demand for high-end laptops is expected to also increase. In addition, OLED manufacturers planning to build 8.6th-generation IT OLED factories are increasing their notebook OLED shipment targets this year to prepare for mass production at the factory. OLED display shipments are also expected to grow by 139.9% year-on-year in 2024.
Although OLED TV display panel shipments are expected to grow 34.8% year-on-year in 2024, this number is still lower than 2022 levels. Therefore, panel manufacturers need to increase OLED display production to maximize the capacity of their Gen 8.5 OLED fabs. This site learned from the report that it is expected that in 2024,
1. Samsung Display will occupy the largest share (52.5%) of large-size OLED panel shipments, followed by
2. LG Display (33.1%), and
3. Glow Electric (10.1%).
Korean manufacturers are expected to dominate large-size OLED shipments this year with an 85.6% share, down from 88.2% in 2023. The reason for this decline is the rise of panel manufacturers in mainland China, whose market share is expected to grow from 11.8% in 2023 to 14.4% in 2024.
Mainland Chinese panel manufacturers are focusing on tablet and laptop OLED shipments and plan to establish 8.6th generation IT OLED factories in the near future.
