Apple recently added track detection functionality to the Workout app on Apple Watch Series 4 and newer models. Read on to learn what it does and how to take advantage of it.
With the release of watchOS 9.2, Apple is introducing the promised track detection feature to supported Apple Watch models. A software update means your watch can now tell when you're on track and ask you if you want to select a lane.
Track Detection uses a combination of Apple Maps data and your watch’s GPS to automatically identify when you’re on a standard 400-meter World Athletics (IAAF) track. At the time of writing, the feature is available in Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the US.
To use this feature, just follow the steps below. Keep in mind that track detection is not supported on Apple Watch Series 3 and older models because these devices cannot run watchOS 9.2. To check that your Apple Watch has the latest software, open the Watch app on your iPhone and go to General -> Software Update. To install new software, your Apple Watch needs to have at least 50% battery, it needs to be on the charger, and it needs to be within range of your iPhone. How to Start a Track Workout
Launch the- Fitness app on your Apple Watch.
- Click on Outdoor running
- . If your Apple Watch detects you're on a track, you'll be prompted to select a lane: Tap Select Lane
- . Use the plus sign
- and minus sign buttons to select a lane, then click to confirm. If this is your first Track workout, select the unit of measurement (miles or meters) and click Confirm
- . If you fall off track during a workout, your Apple Watch will display a reminder. If you change lanes during a workout, swipe right on the watch face, tap Lane, then enter your new lane.
When you're done with your run, you'll get a route map in your workout summary that gives you what Apple calls lane-level accuracy. If you have an Apple Watch Ultra with dual-frequency GPS, it should be more accurate.
How to Enable Lap Reminders
After you complete a lap on the track by following the steps below, you will receive a reminder showing your distance, time, and pace.

- Click on the ellipsis icon (three dots) in the outdoor running card.
- Click Remind.
- Turn the Digital Crown up, tap "Record Lap" , and then turn on "Lap Reminder"
- . What’s impressive about Track Detection is that, unlike some dedicated running watches, it doesn’t require calibration. Apple Watch can even switch to track mode during a regular run if it detects you've reached the track.
