Microsoft is testing a new design for the Windows 11 shutdown dialog

Windows 11 launched last year, and if you've downloaded and installed it, you've probably realized that the operating system is far from complete. Unlike Windows 7 and earlier versions, Windows 11 still feels like a work in progress. The company is continuing to add new features, but design consistency is still missing.

Microsoft recently redesigned the Windows 8-era Open With dialog box, and the tech giant is now exploring new design concepts for closing dialog boxes. For those who don't know, we're talking about the close dialog box that appears on your desktop when you press Alt F4.

As you can see in the screenshot below, the new design removes the Windows logo and "This PC" icon from the shutdown dialog box. The redesigned shutdown dialog promises a streamlined look and takes advantage of system color accents. Additionally, there is another experimental design that applies Mica to the title bar of a dialog box.

While some of us may not be fans of dramatic design makeovers, in many ways, this is the best. Windows 10, which many of us use today, is still supported and will likely remain stable as Microsoft is busy developing Windows 11. If you prefer a new design direction and some new features, Windows 11 is for you.

Windows 11 will finally get better

Microsoft will continue to update Windows 11 and improve it over the next few years. The downside of Windows 11 as a service approach is that it makes the operating system feel unfinished.

As for the redesigned shutdown dialog, we may see it via a smaller monthly update later this year or next year. The first major update to Windows 11, codenamed "Sun Valley 2" scheduled for release later this year, will not be released with the new Shut down redesign.

Windows 11 version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2) is expected to launch later this year and includes many new features. This includes a new task manager with support for dark mode and modern WinUI, an updated taskbar with drag-and-drop support, performance-friendly context menus, tabs in File Explorer, and more.
