The growing discussion of general intelligence (AGI) in artificial intelligence has prompted many to think about what happens when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence. Whether this moment is close or far away depends on who you ask, but I don’t think it’s the most important milestone we should focus on. Which earlier AI milestones will affect everyone? Artificial intelligence surpasses human weaknesses

In the 2022 movie "Social Dilemma", Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology pointed out that artificial intelligence has surpassed human weaknesses. What does this mean? This means that artificial intelligence has been able to use human psychology and behavioral patterns to generate clues that trigger expected results. Does this mean that AI understands psychology? No. This simply means that there is enough human behavioral data about human responses to clues that artificial intelligence programs can generate inputs that may probabilistically cause humans to react in the expected way. This aspect of artificial intelligence has been well applied in everything from online marketing to social media.

Artificial intelligence changes job market

Artificial intelligence is expected to have a fundamental impact on the workforce. The impact is already underway, with companies reporting that they intend to limit their human resources and use AI to increase productivity, with new jobs emerging as AI-powered industries or existing industries adopting AI. While the potential impact of AGI on the workforce may be greater, it is worth noting that most jobs require specialized skills and knowledge. Artificial intelligence that can mimic these skills and repeat this knowledge in useful forms such as emails, written reports, and answers to questions can easily reduce the number of people required for a task, which is long before AGI takes effect.

Artificial intelligence changes human education

In my opinion, this is the most influential one of the changes in artificial intelligence before AGI. Artificial intelligence has surpassed many human students in various standard tests, from high school advanced course exams to American Medical License exams. These data suggest that in the age of artificial intelligence, what humans need to learn, or at least how we evaluate human intelligence, needs to be reexamined. To further complicate this situation, AI mentors are emerging, one view that AI may be appropriate, or even the preferred teacher for some human learners. This development should prompt us to seriously consider the value of human participation in human learning and express it more clearly than before. Otherwise, learners may experience stratification, and the luckiest people will receive guidance from both artificial intelligence and humans, while those with less resources will have to rely on guidance from artificial intelligence alone.

Back to the singularity - AGI?

Given the huge impact that AI has already had, what can we expect AGI to do? My personal point of view is that "universal" in AGI means that artificial intelligence closer to AGI will have stronger capabilities across domains and across modes (such as voice, video, etc.). Therefore, it can be expected that AGI can accomplish more complex tasks than today's artificial intelligence. Judging from the above three challenges, it is conceivable that AGI will exacerbate all of these challenges from a human perspective, creating new technologies that can leverage human weaknesses, new job roles that artificial intelligence can handle, and making it more difficult to clearly identify the role of humans in human education.

What should you do?

I think AGI is a process, not a binary event. As shown in the example above, there will be intermediate events with significant impact. Since there is no universally accepted definition of AGI, we may never be able to agree on whether it has been implemented. So, in my opinion, the best way to prepare for AGI is to understand the challenges and opportunities that artificial intelligence has already brought, and “ride the wind and waves” and adapt to the emerging new developments. This requires developing AI skills based on the relevance of your professional role, focusing on new developments in AI in your field, and adjusting your skills as AI develops.
