Recently, I discussed SVG animations with Andy Clarke, who's planning a new article on the topic. He raised a valid point: "I've heard SMIL is a dead end. What's your take?"
My initial impression mirrored his. Sarah Drasner accurately summarized the situation back in 2017, noting declining WebKit support and the complete absence of SMIL in IE and Edge. Chrome also indicated an intention to deprecate SMIL, citing the growing CSS support for SVG animations. MDN's SMIL documentation even reflected this deprecation warning.
However, Chrome never actually deprecated SMIL, as confirmed by a 2023 thread response. Furthermore, Edge now uses a Chromium engine, essentially aligning with Chrome's behavior. And current caniuse data shows full WebKit support.
While this doesn't declare SMIL fully resurrected, it challenges the "dead end" narrative. Especially considering robust alternatives in CSS and JavaScript, SMIL's future might be uncertain. But it's certainly not defunct.
