On May 7th, whistleblower rquandt broke the news on social platforms that Samsung is developing its own GPU and abandoning the Xclipse GPU solution jointly developed with AMD.

Public information shows that the RDNA-based Xclipse GPU debuted in Exynos 2200 for the first time. "Xclipse" is a combination of "X" and "eclipse" representing Exynos.

Based on the high-performance AMD RDNA 2 architecture, Xclipse inherits advanced graphics features such as hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing (RT) and Variable Rate Shading (VRS) previously only available on PCs, laptops, and consoles.

At that time, Samsung had high hopes for the Xclipse GPU, hoping to compete head-on with Qualcomm's Adreno GPU.

However, judging from the market performance of Exynos, Samsung seems to be not satisfied with the cooperation between the two parties. Starting last year, Samsung began to develop its own GPU solutions internally.

It should be noted that Samsung’s self-developed GPU will not be unveiled soon. The next-generation Exynos platform Exynos 2500 still uses AMD GPU, and the 2026 Exynos 2600 will debut with Samsung’s self-developed GPU.
