According to news from this site on March 7, Dr. Zhou Yuefeng, President of Huawei's data storage product line, recently attended the MWC 2024 conference and specifically demonstrated the new generation of OceanStor designed for warm data (Warm Data) and cold data (Cold Data). Arctic Magnetoelectric Storage Solutions.
Attached to this site Huawei's official press release reads as follows: The cost of this solution is 20% lower than that of magnetic tape, and its power consumption is 90% lower than that of hard disk.
According to foreign technology media blocksandfiles, a Huawei spokesperson also revealed information about the magnetoelectric storage solution:
Huawei’s magneto-electronic disk (MED) is a major innovation in magnetic storage media. The first generation of MED is mainly a large-capacity hard drive, the rack capacity will exceed 10 PB, and the power consumption is less than 2 kW. For the first generation of MED, we positioned it primarily as archival storage. We plan to release it in overseas markets in the first half of 2025.
No other information about MED products is currently known. This is a brand new technology. Huawei said in the statement that this is a "disk" rather than a "hard drive", which means that it is likely to rotate, have tracks and read and write heads.
Its size is not yet known and may not come in the same 3.5-inch form factor as current nearline storage drives from Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital.
In addition, the power consumption performance is also very amazing. Currently a typical 42U rack can accommodate up to 288 hard drives and can store 8.64PB of data (assuming it is equipped with Seagate’s latest 30TB hard drive with heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) function). Assuming the power consumption of a hard drive is 10W, then the power consumption of such a rack is approximately 2.88kW.
4U storage servers such as ASRock Rack 4U100-C612 can accommodate 100 3.5-inch hard drives and can store up to 3PB of data, but consume 1kW of power.
The above is the detailed content of Huawei will launch innovative MED storage products next year: rack capacity exceeds 10 PB and power consumption is less than 2 kW. For more information, please follow other related articles on the PHP Chinese website!
