Although cheap batteries have a bad reputation, Amazon Basics Alkaline AA batteries defy that stereotype. The batteries performed well in my high-drain tests and more than met the expectations of batteries from the big brands. Additionally, the low price of these batteries and the option to buy in bulk make them one of the best options on the market.

Not all AA batteries are the same. From long-lasting lithium batteries to low-cost alkaline batteries, we've picked the best batteries for endurance and performance. Although most modern gadgets now come with built-in battery options, there are still many useful household items that rely on good old AA batteries. Flashlights, toys, clocks, and remote controls are among the most commonly used products. You'll also find bridge cards, DSLR cameras, radios, video game controllers, and travel shavers all relying on them for power.

If you only use a few of the gadgets mentioned above, you're bound to use a lot of battery over the course of a year. This may make rechargeable batteries a more attractive option in the long run, but they're not as convenient, and for some devices, it's better to stick with disposable batteries. Of course, not all disposable batteries are suitable, and you want your batteries to have a good lifespan so they don't need to be replaced as often when you need them most. Therefore, when choosing disposable batteries, it is recommended that you choose a brand with a longer service life, which can reduce the trouble of frequent replacement. At the same time, pay attention to using environmentally friendly batteries to reduce the impact on the environment.

To find out which AA batteries are best for each situation, we ran multiple pairs of batteries continuously in a high-power 500 lumen LED flashlight, measuring the voltage every 30 minutes. A flashlight requires a stable 1.5V to operate at full brightness and around 1.2V to operate at an acceptable brightness level, which most batteries drop in less than an hour. We then selected the best batteries based on performance and price.

Price & Features

Retail price: £3.99 Battery type Alkaline AA (non-rechargeable) batteries. I've avoided cheap battery brands in the past because in my experience you end up with batteries that aren't of good quality and don't last as long. Amazon Basics Alkaline AA is different. Yes, they are cheap, but they are worth every penny. They're available in a variety of sizes, can hold up to 100 batteries - and, importantly, they perform brilliantly.

According to Amazon, these batteries have a 10-year shelf life, feature air- and liquid-tight seals, and can be used for tasks ranging from low-power (remote controls, etc.) to high-power. Drain pipes (lights, etc.).

Usage Review

Amazon does not cite any battery life data for its batteries, saying only that these batteries provide "the power needed by a specific device; ideal for game controllers, toys, flashlights, digital cameras , clock, etc.” That's really what all batteries are for. So, keep testing.

To test the battery I used an Ansmann Energy XC3000 which has a drain test running at 600mA (/- 20%). I bought a set of Amazon Basics Alkaline AAs and randomly selected four batteries from the box to test.

Running the test until the battery registered 0.94V, Amazon Basics alkaline AA batteries averaged 1376mAh - the second highest result I've seen. Impressively, the results were similar for all four cells, with little difference between them.

I let the alkaline batteries sit for a few hours to let them cool down, then retested to see if there was any remaining capacity. On the second drain, I got an extra 219mAh, which brought my total test capacity in the test to 1595mAh - and these batteries came in second overall.

Please note that total capacity does vary with load, so these batteries may have a higher capacity if tested at a lower load. The total load shown here should indicate that these batteries will last a long time in low-power-hungry items, such as remote controls.

Is it worth buying

If you want a cheap battery that can handle more intensive loads, these batteries offer excellent value. You can purchase batteries with a higher total capacity, which may prove better suited for a variety of jobs.

Review Summary

They may be the cheapest batteries you can buy, but in my testing, the Amazon Basics Alkaline AA were the best. They have the second highest overall capacity, behind GP Ultra AA batteries, but the highest initial discharge capacity. On that basis, these batteries can be used for more intensive tasks like game controllers and lights; but if you need a battery for multiple jobs, the GP Ultra is my top choice.
