Intel wins, court vacates $2.18 billion VLSI patent infringement verdict
According to news from this site on December 4, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned the jury’s 2021 verdict that Intel infringed VLSI Technology’s patents and rejected the $2.18 billion compensation judgment against Intel. This is also the history of U.S. patent law. One of the biggest cases.
According to the judge, the case will be sent back to Texas for a new trial to determine how much compensation Intel should pay for infringing the second VLSI patent

In March 2021, the federal court in Texas ruled that Intel had infringed VLSI Technology’s patents and ordered Intel to compensate US$2.18 billion (approximately RMB 15.565 billion yuan)
VLSI previously claimed that Intel's Cascade Lake and Skylake processors infringed on its patent covering data processing improvements, which VLSI purchased from NXP Semiconductors.
In June this year, the U.S. Patent Office (PTAB) declared one of VLSI Technology’s patents invalid, allowing Intel to avoid paying $2.18 billion in capital.
The announcement shows that one of the two patents was originally awarded to Freescale in 2012, and the other was awarded to SigmaTel in 2010.
Freescale later acquired SigmaTel and was acquired by NXP (NXP) in 2015. The two patents were transferred to VLSI Technology LLC in 2019, according to Bloomberg data.
