


Top U.S. Air Force officials discuss leadership in AI operations and strategic advantages
AI is changing the way we do almost everything, including how the United States fights wars, monitors threats and maintains national defense. The role of AI is so critical to military strategy and capabilities that the U.S. Air Force and Space Force named their first chief AI officers this year.
This spring, the U.S. Department of the Air Force (DAF) appointed Eileen Vidrine as chief data and AI officer. Following her appointment, Vidrine rejoins the department from her previous role as senior strategic advisor for data to the federal chief information officer at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB), starting in January 2022. Prior to joining OMB, Vidrine also served as Chief Data Officer for the U.S. Department of the Air Force for more than three years.
Vidrine was interviewed recently to discuss her new role, the experience and skills she brings to the position, and the increasingly important role that AI will play in U.S. defense.
#What gave you the title of chief AI officer in addition to the chief data officer position you held at the time?
Incorporating AI into my role is a natural step in fulfilling the mission of strengthening and modernizing the Department of the Air Force’s data strategy and capabilities.
The U.S. Department of the Air Force and the Secretary of the Air Force have made artificial intelligence a priority. They realize that artificial intelligence will play a key role in the future of the military, including enhancing decision-making processes and streamlining operations. As artificial intelligence technology advances rapidly, the Department of the Air Force must adapt to these changes to stay ahead of the curve
By incorporating AI into my role, I can oversee and direct the department's efforts to effectively utilize AI Technology, including integrating machine learning algorithms and other AI-based solutions to enhance data processing, analysis and utilization. Additionally, I am able to contribute to driving innovation and fostering collaboration within the Department of the Air Force while assisting in the implementation and optimization of AI-based solutions.
Integrating AI technology into my role as Chief Data Officer is an important step by leadership to prioritize and leverage AI technology to enhance the Department of the Air Force. The team I lead is responsible for ensuring the responsible implementation and effective utilization of these technologies to ultimately support the Department of the Air Force's mission and operations
Have you been given any specific responsibilities or missions for this new role? ?
As the Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer for the Department of the Air Force, I have been given a clear mission to position the Department as a ready and competitive leader in AI technology. The U.S. Department of the Air Force has set ambitious goals to achieve AI technology readiness by 2025 and AI competitive advantage by 2027 to gain strategic advantage over adversaries in national security.
In this In the process, my team and I need to achieve the following goals:
- Develop an AI strategy that is consistent with the Department of the Air Force’s digital transformation efforts and contributes to the National Defense Strategy.
- Establish a strong data governance framework to ensure the ethical and responsible use of AI technology.
- Build a strong AI workforce of data scientists, engineers and other experts who can design, develop and deploy AI applications across the Department of the Air Force.
- Identify key use cases and scenarios that can benefit from AI applications and develop and implement AI solutions to solve problems in these areas.
- Build partnerships with other government agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners to drive innovation and collaboration in AI R&D.
Overall, the tasks given to me and my team are clear and important, requiring our concentration and focus to achieve the desired results. We recognize that AI readiness and competitiveness are critical to maintaining the U.S. Air Force’s edge in modern warfare, so we are committed to fulfilling our mission to achieve these goals
Your Background What is it about you that makes you a perfect fit for this role?
As the department’s Chief Data Officer, I have been a leader in data management and analytics for more than three years. I have successfully completed over 80 projects that demonstrated the synergy between data and artificial intelligence. I believe my experience and expertise make me a good fit for the position of Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO) for the Department of the Air Force
But my job is about more than just data and AI. My leadership experience in emerging technologies has been recognized by various organizations, including the Defense Intelligence Agency, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. I have demonstrated throughout my career my ability to understand complex technical concepts and communicate them in a way that is easy for all stakeholders to understand and digest.
As a CDAO, I manage complex data systems and deliver actionable insights to inform business decisions. This experience has given me a keen eye for areas for improvement and a willingness to take bold steps to drive change. .
What skills, knowledge and personal attributes do you think will help you succeed?
First and foremost, I am a data leader with a strong technical background. My technical expertise allows me to see the bigger picture and identify innovative solutions that can be crafted to improve an organization's strategic operations. I have a thorough understanding of the latest technology advancements, which helps me lead teams in the precise deployment of new systems and processes.
It’s not all technical, however, as soft skills are just as important. I have high emotional intelligence, which makes me an excellent collaborator and teamwork facilitator. Creating a positive organizational culture is a critical prerequisite for success. I am committed to creating an inclusive environment where team members feel valued, respected and heard. Commitment to the team allows me to use my personal strengths to drive interdepartmental relationships that are critical to strategic success
What impact do you think this role will have on your career in the short and long term?
I have the opportunity to lead and execute data and AI strategies to integrate disruptive technologies into Department of the Air Force processes and operations, delivering innovative solutions and ensuring mission readiness capabilities that enable our warfighters. success is directly related.
My goal is to streamline processes and improve efficiencies throughout the Department of the Air Force's IT landscape in the short term. I plan to leverage technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve responsiveness to warfighter needs. The impact of these changes will be felt immediately, increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of our work
My long-term goal is to build a culture of innovation through effective collaboration and partnerships. By creating an environment for rapid prototyping and knowledge sharing, we can incrementally implement transformative change for the warfighter that accumulates over time, giving us greater competitive advantage.
