Zipline, the world’s leading expert in just-in-time logistics and drone delivery, has revealed that it has set another precedent by conducting the first beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flight in the United States without any ground observers.
Zipline revealed the news at the close of trading on Friday, saying it had completed the first U.S. BVLOS flight without ground monitors just two months after receiving approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly these missions. This open licensing is seen as a necessity for drone companies of all types to be able to scale up their activities, especially those in the aerial delivery business.
"Zipline earlier this year became the first company in U.S. history to receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to use onboard sensing systems to enable autonomous long-distance drone delivery flights, and today, we create just that history. This is widely considered the Holy Grail of approval to expand drone delivery operations... (It) means Zipline can now go from serving thousands of homes across the United States to serving hundreds of thousands of homes. "
In fact, Zipline will initially rely primarily on P1 drone technology, which has been used to deliver to more than 815,000 customers in Africa, Japan, the United States and elsewhere. The company plans to launch operations of its cutting-edge automated P2 platform in 2024, just one year after launching it last March.
