On June 25, Huawei’s developer official website issued an announcement announcing that in order to improve application performance experience and reduce power consumption impact, Huawei App Market will fully upgrade applications to 64-bit versions. Starting from August 1, 2023, Huawei App Market will begin to gradually clean up applications that only support 32-bit, and require developers to promptly upgrade and replace application packages.
According to Huawei's official recommendations, developers can use the following adaptation methods: First, it is recommended to directly upload the 64-bit APK package body to ensure the best performance experience on 64-bit models. Secondly, developers can use App Bundle application distribution method, upload aab format software package. During the distribution process, App Bundle will split and package the aab package into the corresponding APK according to the device's CPU type to achieve flexible distribution and effectively reduce the size of the application package.
With the launch of new Arm-based Android models, the trend of only supporting 64-bit applications and no longer supporting 32-bit has become increasingly obvious. According to the editor's understanding, starting from July 1, 2023, mainstream app stores such as OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi will also gradually clear out applications that only support 32-bit. Xiaomi officially stated that as of March 30, 2023, the adaptation rate of head applications in mainstream app stores has reached 93%, and the adaptation rate of all applications has reached 90%.
Huawei’s measures aim to promote the transition of application development to 64-bit versions to provide higher performance and compatibility. In order to meet industry development trends and user needs for application experience, developers should remain vigilant and upgrade their applications in a timely manner. With the popularity of new Arm-based Android models, application developers should also speed up the pace of adaptation to ensure that applications can run normally in the new 64-bit environment.
