According to news on July 4, Mazda announced that it will discontinue the production of the medium and large SUV model CX-9 in 2024, and plans to launch the CX-90 as a replacement for its flagship SUV model.
According to data released by Mazda, in the first two quarters of this year, CX-9 sales were 17,359 units. In comparison, another Mazda model, the CX-5, sold 81,804 units in the same period. Last year, combined CX-5 and CX-9 sales reached 353,926 units and 59,264 units. One of the main reasons why Mazda decided to discontinue the CX-9 was that its sales failed to meet expectations.
According to the editor’s understanding, the Mazda CX-9 was originally born during the cooperation between Mazda and Ford. The first-generation CX-9 used the Ford CD3 platform. It is equipped with a V6 engine with a capacity of 3.5 liters, which was upgraded to a 3.7 liter engine in 2008. For 2015, the second-generation CX-9 was updated and redesigned, using the same front-wheel-drive platform as the CX-5. Currently, the CX-9 is only available in a four-cylinder turbocharged version.
As the successor of the CX-9, the CX-90 has been improved in size and luxury. However, compared with the CX-9, the CX-90 has reduced elements of Mazda's family-style soulful design in its exterior design. This may be one of the reasons why some Mazda fans don't like the CX-90 very much.
According to the editor’s understanding, the CX-90 will be equipped with a 3.3-liter in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 340 Horsepower, peak torque of 500 Nm, and equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the CX-90 will also launch a plug-in hybrid version, equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and motor combination, with a maximum power of 323 horsepower, a maximum torque of 500 Nm, and a pure electric cruising range of approximately 63 kilometers. It is expected that the latest model of CX-90 will be launched in the domestic market in November this year, but the price may be more expensive.
