Amazon confirmed that it does not plan to host this year’s re:MARS conference covering cutting-edge technologies such as robotics and space, but will instead incorporate these topics into its existing schedule of events for its AWS cloud services.

The tech giant launched re:MARS (which stands for Machine Learning, Automation, Robotics and Space) in 2019 as a platform for startups, academics, researchers and executives to discuss the latest developments in these technologies. It evolved out of a private invitation-only event called Mars, which attracted the tech elite and was hosted by Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos.

Amazon said the cancellation of the re:MARS conference was not for budgetary reasons. Faced with slowing sales growth and a bleak economic outlook, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been looking at costs across all aspects of the company. The company has experienced its largest layoffs in history, and Jassy has canceled numerous projects, including the Amazon Care telemedicine initiative, a "treasure truck" traveling display, Glow children's video conferencing equipment and the Explore virtual tour service.

Amazon used the re:MARS conference to showcase some futuristic innovations like delivery drones, warehouse robots and the first home robot. Bezos also gave a lecture on space colonization and tested a pair of giant remote-controlled robotic hands. At last year's conference, Amazon showed off the ability of its Alexa digital assistant to imitate deceased relatives.
