The path that AI takes to “replace” humans is very different from our original vision. Our original idea was to let robots do manual labor and dangerous labor instead of us to free up our limbs. We did not expect that AI would first pose a threat to our brains, intelligence, creativity and hearts. AI is designing for us and even creating for us.

Friends who are familiar with me know that I have always been an optimist and a positive optimist. I believe that the significance of artificial intelligence to us is not only that it can simulate, enhance and expand human thinking, but more importantly, the development of AI technology allows us to seriously understand what language is, what is thinking, and what is intelligence. It allows us to understand people themselves.

As the linguist and philosopher Chomsky pointed out in an article on ChatGPT a while ago, the human brain is not a pattern matching statistical engine like ChatGPT and its similar products. It is the kind of " Gobble" hundreds of terabytes of data and infer the most likely conversational responses, or provide the most likely answers to scientific questions. In contrast, the human brain is an efficient and elegant system that requires only a small amount of information to function. It uses "small models" rather than large models, and its goal is not to find rough connections between data points but to create explanations. So I am not worried at all that AI will replace human creativity, because what can be replaced is not real creation.

Human artistic creation is guided by purpose and driven by desire. Just like AlphaGo, Ke Jie was defeated at that time. Ke Jie was very sad at first, but he quickly recovered because artificial intelligence opened up many new ideas for Go, and the charm of Go has not disappeared. Just as photography did not replace the art of painting in the 19th century, neither did computers and artificial intelligence.

Regarding the issue of ChatGPT, this AI issue is still worthy of debate. But what I have always believed is that there are multiple paths for the development of AI. Even general artificial intelligence and strong artificial intelligence in the future are not meant to replace anything. They have multiple futures of their own.

The fantasy of robots since the 19th century, those various science fiction novels, and science fiction movies, often make us forget that artificial intelligence is a work of art, not an artist. It is something that is designed, not the subject. Moreover, all our criticisms and concerns about AI, and all the weaknesses and threats of AI, are not lacking in us humans. The threat of AI to humans still comes from humans themselves.

However, there are indeed other facts that worry us. Today we see that on the one hand, information is infinitely accumulated, computing power is infinitely increased, and channels are extremely convenient; but on the other hand, automatic technology makes our sensibilities increasingly impoverished, social media makes the self more and more hollow, and various outputs Let the public become more and more shallow.

As far as schools are concerned, the more we teach, the less we learn; the more we learn, the less we think. The more we click on the Internet, the weaker our memory becomes; the more we browse, the less impressed we are. People are becoming more and more "imbecile" in the iteration of increasingly smart technologies. In the abyss of social media, more and more people are falling into isolation, depression and numbness online.

Art is here to face this problem and hope to change this reality.

The most important thing about art for us contemporary people is to inspire our subjectivity and our autonomy. Art life is first and foremost a life as an art producer, not as a consumer. When we discuss AIGC (artificial intelligence generated content) issues today, we often look at them from the consumer side, not from the production side.

Art is the technology that creates the subject. In the art of the digital intelligence era, everyone is a creator, everyone is a gardener, and everyone is a flower in this garden.

So we must re-raise the creation that belongs to mankind. We need to fight a battle against the human brain. In this counterattack between the human brain and the computer brain, art will definitely be our main battlefield. We must proactively apply AI tools.
