Korean media: There is a shortage of AI-driven GPUs, CPUs, and APs, and Korean companies such as Samsung will benefit

Jiweiwang news, according to South Korea's Daily Economic News, the global chip industry has been affected by high inventory levels due to weak demand, but the inventory of advanced chips, especially graphics chips (GPU), is being rapidly depleted.

With the outbreak of artificial intelligence, it has triggered a shortage of GPUs and the expansion of production capacity by big data and server operators. This is not only beneficial to GPU manufacturer Nvidia, but also to large-capacity DRAM chip manufacturers such as Samsung and SK Hynix. Also beneficial. Data shows that as of the end of March, Nvidia's GPU inventory was worth $4.61 billion, a 10.6% decrease from the end of December. This was the company's first inventory decline since the fourth quarter of 2019.

With the rise of ChatGPT, the surge in demand has caused GPU and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) DRAM chips to be in short supply.

According to data from market research agency TrendForce, shipments of artificial intelligence servers are expected to increase to 1.18 million units by the end of this year, an increase of 38.4% over last year. Artificial intelligence chip demand is expected to grow by 46%.

Server makers and their customers also say they have to wait more than six months to get their hands on Nvidia's latest GPUs.

But the system chip shortage is not limited to GPU manufacturers such as Nvidia.

Inventories at Intel, a maker of central processing units (CPUs), and Qualcomm, a maker of application processor (AP) chips, are rapidly depleting. Intel's CPU and Qualcomm's AP chip inventory assets were US$13 billion and US$68.6 million respectively at the end of the first quarter, down 1.7% and 1.1% respectively from the end of 2022.

As the supply of GPU, CPU and AP chips becomes increasingly tight, the demand for large-capacity memory chips in servers is also rising, which bodes well for Samsung and SK Hynix.

Nvidia’s graphics processor unit H100 is powered by high-performance HBM3 DRAM chips provided by SK Hynix, the world’s second-largest memory manufacturer.

HBM chips vertically interconnect multiple DRAM chips, which can significantly increase data processing speed compared to traditional DRAM products. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and big data, the demand for HBM chips will grow rapidly.

Samsung also supplies its advanced chips to Nvidia and is expected to receive more orders from the GPU maker.

According to an industry official, Nvidia’s main GPUs are manufactured by TSMC. But Samsung is emerging as a strong candidate to split work with TSMC for Nvidia. ”
