Samsung plans OLED screens for iPad and MacBook
Samsung is planning to build a new production line in South Korea to produce larger OLED displays for tablets and laptops, with the company’s ultimate goal being to fulfill orders for future Apple products.
Apple plans to release its first iPad Pro models with OLED displays in 2024, and said Samsung will produce the displays for those models on one of its existing production lines . Samsung's future production line will be located in another factory capable of making OLED displays large enough for laptops, paving the way for an OLED display-equipped MacBook Pro, which is rumored to launch in 2025 or later.
Apple has been transitioning its iPad and MacBook lines to mini-LED displays, and OLED will be the next step after that. Unlike mini-LED displays, OLED panels use self-illuminating pixels and don't require a backlight, which improves contrast and helps extend battery life in future iPad and MacBook models. Apple already uses OLED displays in its latest iPhones and all Apple Watch models.
Meanwhile, Apple is rumored to be planning more devices with mini-LED displays, including a new 27-inch monitor that could essentially be a Studio Display Pro.
