HomePHP FrameworkLaravelHow to change Laravel's .env file content

With the continuous development and application of the Laravel framework, many developers will face the need to change the content of the .env file when using Laravel. However, many developers may not know how to change the content in the .env file. This article will briefly introduce how to change the contents of Laravel's .env file.

What is an .env file?

.env is one of the configuration files of the Laravel framework. It saves the application's environment configuration variables, such as database information, mail settings, etc. This file stores the key-value pairs of all application variables, with different key-value pairs separated by equal signs.

The default location of the .env file is ".env" in the root directory of Laravel. This file is usually placed in the ignore (Git) or exclude (SVN) file. This is to protect sensitive information from was accidentally made public.

How to change the .env file?

In a project, you can open the project's .env file and modify its contents. If the .env file does not exist, you can create a new .env file based on .env.example and add configuration variables to it.

The following are the steps to modify the .env file:

Step 1: Open the .env file

Find the .env file in the project root directory. Open the file with your favorite editor. It is recommended to use a text editor such as Sublime, Atom, Visual Studio Code, etc. for editing.

Step 2: Modify the content of the .env file

You can modify the values of configuration variables in the .env file as needed, such as database information, email settings, etc. After making changes, be sure to save the file.

Example:

APP_URL=http://localhost

DB_CONNECTION=mysql
DB_HOST=127.0.0.1
DB_PORT=3306
DB_DATABASE=database_name
DB_USERNAME=database_user
DB_PASSWORD=database_password

Step 3: Regenerate the configuration cache

After modifying the environment variables, the Laravel framework needs to re-read the file. Since Laravel's default behavior is to cache all configuration information, the configuration cache needs to be regenerated.

Run the following command in the terminal (command line):

php artisan config:cache

This command will rebuild the configuration cache. The cache configuration is usually the config.php file stored in the bootstrap/cache directory.

Step 4: Verify configuration

After modifying the .env file, you can use the Laravel application to verify whether the configuration file was modified successfully. Enter your application URL into the browser and if everything works fine, your changes were successful.

After Laravel 5.2, .env files support comments. Comments start with "#", and Laravel will automatically skip comment lines when reading the file. Therefore, if you want to add a comment in the .env file, it is recommended to start with #.

Summary

.env file is part of the Laravel framework and is used to store application configuration variables. Modifying the .env file is very simple. You can open this file with any text editor, modify the configuration values as needed, run the "config:cache" command to regenerate the configuration cache, and finally verify whether your configuration changes are successful. To ensure security, it is recommended to keep sensitive information outside of this file to avoid leakage.

The best full-stack Laravel application deployment strategies include: 1. Zero downtime deployment, 2. Blue-green deployment, 3. Continuous deployment, and 4. Canary release. 1. Zero downtime deployment uses Envoy or Deployer to automate the deployment process to ensure that applications remain available when updated. 2. Blue and green deployment enables downtime deployment by maintaining two environments and allows for rapid rollback. 3. Continuous deployment Automate the entire deployment process through GitHubActions or GitLabCI/CD. 4. Canary releases through Nginx configuration, gradually promoting the new version to users to ensure performance optimization and rapid rollback.
