Microsoft announces redesign of Windows 11 File Explorer to support tabs

Tab support in Windows is one of the most popular features in Feedback Hub. In the past, Microsoft has tried to bring this to users through Windows Sets. Work on Windows Sets was eventually abandoned, but the company didn't abandon the idea of ​​tabs in File Explorer, and Microsoft started working on File Explorer tabs again.

At the Hybrid Work event, Microsoft officially confirmed that future preview builds will come with a new File Explorer. The much-anticipated tabs are now enabled in internally built Explorers, and we expect a public rollout later this year, with testers soon able to access tabs.

Microsoft hasn’t added a new File Explorer to Windows 11 previews yet, but the company teased its new design during the event. As you can see in the screenshot below, Explorer’s tabs are similar to Microsoft Edge tabs. You can create new tabs, drag and drop tabs, and now you can select a tab or window on right-click.

These improvements are expected to arrive with Windows 11 version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2), and Microsoft is also developing some new features for the taskbar and Start menu. For example, the Start menu will get folder support and the taskbar will be updated with drag-and-drop support.
