Microsoft Word finally gets text predictions on macOS in 2022

As early as February last year, Microsoft added text prediction functionality to Word for Windows. At the time, it wasn't clear when the upgrade would hit the web client or Word for macOS, but thanks to the updated roadmap, we now know the feature will be rolling out to Mac later this year.

Microsoft quietly confirmed text prediction features for Word on macOS in an entry update on its roadmap page, which the company has yet to officially announce. As you probably know, Microsoft Word's text precautions can go a long way in helping users write documents quickly and easily.

As Microsoft notes, Word will get text prediction capabilities in September 2022. This appears to be the current release goal, with the caveat that the update will not be available to everyone. Microsoft is targeting the consumer channel, monthly enterprise channel and semi-annual enterprise channel.

How Text Prediction Works in Word

After the update, text predictions will start to appear in real-time next to the words you type, and predictions will be grayed out by default, meaning you'll need to use the TAB key to approve suggestions. You can also reject a predicted word or phrase by pressing the ESC key.

The text prediction feature apparently uses machine learning to adapt to time and better understand your writing style or language preferences. It's been in development for a year, and many users say the feature really helps minimize spelling and grammatical errors.

It’s worth pointing out that Microsoft’s rival service Google Docs has offered the same functionality across all platforms for some time now. The update will restore the balance between Microsoft's powerful Word software and its rival service, Google Docs.

Other improvements for Word

We don’t know when the feature will arrive in the web version, but another roadmap update has confirmed that Word for the web will receive dark mode. While the existing dark mode only darkens the toolbars and ribbon, Word for the web will use a new dark mode that will also apply to the editor screen.

Word web will also give users the option to switch between their preferred levels of darkness.
