New File Explorer for Windows 11 with support for tabs is coming soon, possibly after 22H2

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced a number of new features for Windows 11 as part of the 2022 Updates. New features include the ability to perform certain actions by selecting text directly within apps, such as tab support in Teams and Explorer. The new tabbed file explorer is available for testing, but most users are still waiting to try it out.

Tab integration is one of the most important feature updates to File Explorer in years. File Explorer's interface has remained largely unchanged since the release of Windows 8. With the next update to Windows 11, Microsoft is adding tabs and a new home view to File Explorer.

While tab integration makes it easy to work with multiple folders and directories, File Explorer’s new home view lets you see your recently used files, including documents and pictures from OneDrive. We've been able to use the feature with a third-party tool called "ViveTool," but it apparently doesn't work for many users in the Insider program.

That has changed, and Microsoft has now started pushing tags to everyone in the Windows Insider Program as the company prepares the feature for a fall 2022 release.

However, it's not officially here yet for anyone in the production channel.

Reports suggest that Windows 11 version 22H2 will land in the last week of September 2022, with a wider rollout planned for October to November. At this time, it appears that the tabbed file explorer will not be included in the final version of the next feature update.

In fact, tab support is currently missing in the RTM build of Windows 11 22H2. what happens? Following the release of Windows 11 version 22H2 in September, Microsoft appears to be planning to turn on tab integration in File Explorer via an upcoming cumulative update.

This means File Explorer tab support will arrive later, probably in October or November.

Recent changes to File Explorer

Meanwhile, Microsoft has fixed several File Explorer glitches, as well as a taskbar bug in the latest preview build. For example, the company fixed an issue where folders suddenly duplicated in File Explorer.

Another bug has been fixed where users can drag the left half of the File Explorer title bar via mouse or touch. Fixed a bug where selecting folders and using the context menu option to open them in tabs didn't work.

These fixes next to the File Explorer tab are now available to users registered in the Dev channel.
