Home >Common Problem >Windows 11's latest update can finally make your computer faster
Despite the January 2022 security update, Windows 11 still has an issue where some devices may run slower than usual. The bug affects HDDs and SSDs, with reports of some storage drives running more than 50% slower, and Microsoft has yet to properly address the issue.
This problem was first reported in July 2021 and has been plaguing users for a long time. The issue was cumulatively officially resolved in December 2021, when Microsoft admitted that a bug in Windows 11 would impact performance on "all disks (NVMe, SSD, HDD)" by performing unnecessary operations every time a write operation occurred.
As we speculated in December, Windows 11 cumulative updates only fixed these performance issues for some users, and there were reports that SSDs or HDDs were still slower than they should be.
The bug is still present in the December 2021 and January 2022 security updates, but it appears that the new optional update finally resolves the storage drive clutter.
Based on our own testing and reporting, Windows 11 KB5008353 applies some important fixes and resolves critical SSD/HDD issues for everyone. Performance issues that have plagued the operating system for nearly eight months have been fixed.
In the release notes, Microsoft noted that it fixed another bug in USN journals that caused strange performance regressions.
"Resolved a performance regression that occurred when update sequence number (USN) logging was enabled," Microsoft said.
Additionally, users confirmed that they no longer see performance issues with their storage drives and that the operating system feels faster.
"Not only on NVME, even my SATA SSD is faster now. Earlier Windows 11 booted slower than Windows 10," one user noted, with similar confirmations in the Feedback Hub.
While the fix for the storage drive issue is obviously important, this patch also fixes a number of other bugs. For example, a bug that could impact File Explorer performance was finally resolved. Likewise, Microsoft has also fixed Windows 11 taskbar issues.
If you've upgraded to Windows 11 to get the shiny rounded corners and new Start menu, and your device is noticeably slower, installing the optional update may finally fix the problem.
Keep in mind that these fixes will be rolled out to everyone via the February 2022 Patch Tuesday update, so if you have a fast device, you can skip the optional update.
