Using artificial intelligence (AI)-based video analysis technology, safety information and warnings can be provided to drivers, pedestrians and other road users near intersections. Nippon Electric Corporation (NEC) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) have successfully conducted a proof-of-concept (PoC) for the project.
In a PoC conducted from June to September of this year, the Virginia Smart Road Test was analyzed using information collected by cameras and video analysis equipment mounted on traffic signal poles. The situation inside and outside an intersection of tracks. NEC provides video analysis technology that uses artificial intelligence technology to identify, classify, and track road users such as vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles around intersections. In addition, the feasibility of infrastructure-coordinated mobility services (in which infrastructure and vehicles exchange information through wireless communication) was evaluated by integrating this technology with a C-V2X system that issues safety information and warnings to vehicles and pedestrians.
NEC and VTTI are also working on traffic safety applications such as prediction of collisions between vehicles and pedestrians, pedestrian crossing detection and right/left turning vehicle detection. In these cases, the video analysis AI successfully notified the vehicle within 0.5 seconds after detecting the possibility of a collision with a pedestrian. This will help reduce traffic accidents as it can quickly communicate the risk of collisions at intersections with poor visibility, for example.
This PoC combines the most advanced artificial intelligence-based video analysis solutions with C-V2X technology to provide safety guarantees for vehicles and pedestrians near intersections. These technologies are able to identify dangerous situations in drivers’ and pedestrians’ blind spots and notify them of such situations. Koji Kikuchi, Senior Director of Smart City Business Development Division at NEC Corporation, said: "NEC believes that this solution can help reduce the number of car accidents and fatalities and support the roadside infrastructure required for autonomous driving."
The concept of coordinated infrastructure mobility that NEC aims to realize requires highly reliable, low-latency communication over a dedicated network to predict or detect accidents near intersections. VTTI believes that this PoC will complement C-V2X technology and improve road safety by notifying vehicles and pedestrians of possible traffic hazards when passing through intersections. VTTI plans to work with NEC to apply the results of the PoC to public road intersections.
