VSCode becomes Facebook's default development environment

Facebook announced that it has chosen Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code as the company’s default development environment. In fact, before switching to VS Code, Facebook already had its own development environment called Nuclide.

Now, Facebook is migrating Nuclide functionality to Visual Studio Code and building extensions to improve Facebook’s development workflow.

It is reported that although Facebook developers will install Visual Studio Code locally on their laptops, most development will be completed directly on a separate development server. Therefore, VS Code should have a seamless way to access code on these servers.

To meet this need, Facebook internally developed a remote development extension for VS Code. Facebook announced that it will share the usage of its remote development extension with Microsoft and will also help Microsoft further improve VSCode's Remote Development Extension.

To help Microsoft enhance the product range, we provided input through our experience and expertise in supporting Nuclide remote development. Microsoft has now created such a powerful remote experience that it allows us to move away from our own custom solutions. We're also excited about the remote development capabilities Microsoft is adding as an extension for anyone using Visual Studio Code.

Now that Visual Studio Code has become an important part of Facebook's future development, it will be interesting to see which large organization will turn to VS Code next.
