Clair Obscur: Expedition3 is an epic work of art that solves my turn-based combat problems and gives me experience what might be one of the best RPG stories in the genre's history. Given its beauty, sadness and touching level, it may even be one of the best stories in video game history. But this is just one of many aspects, others include performance, atmosphere, music, and of course the combat system. Almost no drawbacks were found. Without jumping to the end, this is definitely a 10/10 game, and it easily became my favorite candidate for Game of the Year (GOTY) even after Prince Blue took over my GOTY throne a few weeks ago (I still like Prince Blue, of course).

Expedition3 tells the story of Gustave, who lives in a dilapidated Paris, a city destroyed by a disaster that continues every year. Citizens can only live to the age of 0, and then they will be erased by a mysterious giant on the horizon - the painter, who will display a number counting down from 100 on a huge pillar. Now it's 3.

‘Clair Obscur: Expedition<🎵>3’ Review: A 10 If There Ever Was One

This is the number of the expedition, as citizens are often sent out to try to kill the painter and stop the cycle. They have failed 67 times, but this time it will be successful, right? Well, that's what you're going to find out, but things quickly move in a bad direction, and you're left with the core team: Gustave, his de facto daughter Maelle, Lune, the elemental controller, and other members you'll recruit along the way, which is in line with the tradition of RPG gaming.

"Darkward" Charlie Cox himself stood out in his first video game role, but the voice actor also includes legendary figures such as Andy Serkins and Ben Starr, who I won't go into details here. But the entire dubbing lineup is excellent, conveying emotions in ways we rarely see in this genre through voiceover and motion capture.

In my opinion, the story of RPG games is usually a bit…over the end, depending on the game itself, and this crazy world does require some brain-burning processing, but it is still a coherent story and contains some of the most shocking twists I've encountered in the game that I really didn't expect, and the players are also very understanding and without spoilers. All you can say is...waiting for the second act. Waiting for the third act. Waiting for the conclusion. When you reach each stage, you will understand.

The environment design here is extraordinary. I've taken countless screenshots and when I thought I've seen the coolest area, there's another one at the corner. All of this is enhanced by an incredible soundtrack, and you'll surely want to add it to your Spotify unless it reminds you of the heartbreaking moments in the game or the most exhausting boss battles.

This brings us to the combat system, which allows me to advance the game because it combines turn-based strategies and real-time reactions, i.e. dodge and block, requiring corresponding timing and reaction abilities. The “Picto” build system is even more icing on the cake, creating truly interesting characters, whether it’s DPS, tank or auxiliary, no particular character is locked in one character and has enough flexibility to experiment.

Even a game with a score of 10 is not perfect. At some point, if you find an effective build, your loop can get a little boring, and there are only a few encounters that really force you to change your strategy dramatically (e.g., a guy who can only take damage from blocking counterattacks. And those damn pantomimes. You'll see). In some encounters, trying to dodge or block an eight-combo or one-hit kill every other round can be a bit exhausting.

I'm not particularly fond of navigation, either, especially in the open world, when you want to go back to certain areas. I love flying and swimming on our own “Babai”, but it’s easy to waste time getting lost instead of instantly getting to where you’ve been.

These are all small problems. This is an amazing game and the more you play it, the more amazing it becomes. Highly recommend to anyone, even someone like me who has been allergic to turn-based combat before. You may need to adapt to it, but stick with it and learn the system and experience one of the best games you may have played in years.
