WhatsApp Web connects to your WhatsApp account on your iPhone (or Android device) and forwards messages to your iPad, allowing you to send and receive messages, pictures, and videos. It is not a native WhatsApp app on iPad, but it is the best alternative.

WhatsApp Release Date for iPad
Although there is no WhatsApp app on the iPad at the moment, it looks like it will be launched soon. As of September 2023, WhatsApp Beta testers have been able to try out WhatsApp Beta for iPad. The beta version is the most promising evidence that WhatsApp is about to land on iPad. That said, it has been beta testing for more than a year, and WhatsApp is still far from releasing its final version. Obviously, this is not the company's top priority.
Why is WhatsApp still in the beta testing phase for iPad? If the missing WhatsApp for iPad is due to security issues, changes that allow RCS message support in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 may pave the way for iPad apps. Support for Rich Communications Services (RCS) means that iPhone users can see if their messages have been sent to Android users and see input indicators indicating whether they are replying. Apple claims that the reason why RCS did not appear on iPhones before was due to security issues. Whether this has anything to do with the obvious problem with WhatsApp logging into iPad remains to be seen.
Anyway, WhatsApp doesn't seem to want to turn WhatsApp off of iPad. Over the years, there have been many signs that WhatsApp will eventually land on iPad, including the above-mentioned statement from Will Cathcart and his tweet in August 2021 that suggests that the WhatsApp team, which is owned by Meta/Facebook, is developing the WhatsApp app for iPad.
How to use WhatsApp Web on iPad
There is currently no WhatsApp app for iPad, but you can use WhatsApp on your iPad by:
- Open Safari on your iPad and visit web.whatsapp.com.
- Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
- Click "Settings" in WhatsApp.
- Click "Connected Devices".
- Click "Connect Device".
- Use your iPhone to scan the QR code and pair it with your iPhone.
- A web page should now load, displaying all your recent WhatsApp messages, as well as any media or voice notes.
Please note that there are some limitations to using WhatsApp in this way. Most importantly, iOS/iPadOS does not support notifications from web browsers, unlike using the service on a Mac or PC. You will not be notified of new messages.
