WhatsApp: The Blessings for iPad users? Detailed explanation of whatsApp usage and beta installation of iPad version
WhatsApp is popular all over the world, with more than one billion daily active users. It allows users to send personal or group messages through Wi-Fi or 4G/5G networks, saving mobile phone bills. (Of course, you may have to pay extra if the data traffic limit is exceeded, so use with caution!)
However, at present, WhatsApp only supports iPhones, and although WhatsApp head Will Cathcart admitted in January 2021 that people have long called for the launch of iPad apps, there has not been an iPad version so far. Cathcart has revealed that most of the infrastructure needed to develop iPad apps is ready, but he has not made any immediate commitments. Subsequently, in June 2021, Facebook CEO Mark Zukerberg and Cathcart both confirmed to WaBetaInfo that cross-device support for WhatsApp is coming soon.
While it’s been a long time since “coming soon”, we probably don’t have to wait too long. WhatsApp for iPad has entered the beta testing phase since September 2023. If you participate in the WhatsApp Beta testing program, you can install it on your iPad via TestFlight. However, it is not widely available. We failed to try to join the WhatsApp Beta for iPad in September 2024, but our Macwelt colleagues successfully joined and tested in January 2025.
There is still no news about when the final version will be released to the public.
Don't be discouraged if you are not participating in WhatsApp Beta testing. This tutorial will show you how to use WhatsApp on your iPad using WhatsApp Web, and as our Macwelt colleagues said, the beta version is “reminiscent of WhatsApp’s web or Mac version.”
WhatsApp Web connects to your WhatsApp account on your iPhone (or Android device) and forwards messages to your iPad, allowing you to send and receive messages, pictures, and videos. It is not a native WhatsApp app on iPad, but it is the best alternative.
If you want to use WhatsApp on your Mac, there is also a WhatsApp desktop version. For more information, see: How to Install WhatsApp on Mac.
WhatsApp Release Date for iPad
Although there is no WhatsApp app on the iPad at the moment, it looks like it will be launched soon. As of September 2023, WhatsApp Beta testers have been able to try out WhatsApp Beta for iPad. The beta version is the most promising evidence that WhatsApp is about to land on iPad. That said, it has been beta testing for more than a year, and WhatsApp is still far from releasing its final version. Obviously, this is not the company's top priority.
Why is WhatsApp still in the beta testing phase for iPad? If the missing WhatsApp for iPad is due to security issues, changes that allow RCS message support in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 may pave the way for iPad apps. Support for Rich Communications Services (RCS) means that iPhone users can see if their messages have been sent to Android users and see input indicators indicating whether they are replying. Apple claims that the reason why RCS did not appear on iPhones before was due to security issues. Whether this has anything to do with the obvious problem with WhatsApp logging into iPad remains to be seen.
Anyway, WhatsApp doesn't seem to want to turn WhatsApp off of iPad. Over the years, there have been many signs that WhatsApp will eventually land on iPad, including the above-mentioned statement from Will Cathcart and his tweet in August 2021 that suggests that the WhatsApp team, which is owned by Meta/Facebook, is developing the WhatsApp app for iPad.
How to use WhatsApp Web on iPad
There is currently no WhatsApp app for iPad, but you can use WhatsApp on your iPad by:
- Open Safari on your iPad and visit web.whatsapp.com.
- Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
- Click "Settings" in WhatsApp.
- Click "Connected Devices".
- Click "Connect Device".
- Use your iPhone to scan the QR code and pair it with your iPhone.
- A web page should now load, displaying all your recent WhatsApp messages, as well as any media or voice notes.
Please note that there are some limitations to using WhatsApp in this way. Most importantly, iOS/iPadOS does not support notifications from web browsers, unlike using the service on a Mac or PC. You will not be notified of new messages.
Apart from that and some minor mistakes, the service is very easy to use and is a great alternative for WhatsApp users who want to access the service on their iPad.
WhatsApp Web is a free and easy way to access WhatsApp services on your iPad. While you won't get notifications (as you would when using the service on your Mac or PC), it's an excellent way to easily access messages on your tablet.
How to install WhatsApp Beta on iPad
To run WhatsApp Beta for iPad, you need to use Apple's TestFlight.
If you are lucky, it should be available here.
Unfortunately, WhatsApp Beta for iPad is now full and has been ongoing for a while, but there are occasional spaces, so it's worth checking out.
How to use WhatsApp Beta on iPad
Our German colleagues tried out WhatsApp Beta for iPad and made the following reviews:
You can place WhatsApp widgets on the home screen. You can see the digital badge, the last two chats display, and the four chats display. It looks like there will be two other widget variants with message previews, but these variants are not yet available.
To associate your own account, you need to scan the QR code that appears in the new app. After a short period of time, your own chat history will sync so you can use the app on your iPad and iPhone.
WhatsApp Beta for iPad runs on all iPads that can run iOS 12 and later, so the requirements are quite low, and even owners of older devices can benefit from it.
