


Capcom provides a preview download code for the remake of "Ghost Warrior 2: The Destiny of the Warrior" to give me the opportunity to experience the game, and I am very happy about it. This game is not a simple hack and slash game. It is more like a fusion of the classic Resident Evil framework, a more strategic Devil May Cry combat system, and a large number of samurai elements and myths are added, which is absolutely wonderful.

In "Ghost Warrior 2: The Destiny of the Warrior", you will play Yagyu Tokio, embarking on the road of revenge against the evil resurrection lord and his army of demons. Since I'm most familiar with Capcom's Resident Evil series, I've discovered a lot of similarities from the beginning.
First of all, like the classic Resident Evil game, Ghost Warrior also adopts a fixed perspective. Every time you enter the scene, the camera displays the environment and your character from the preset position, and the movement of the character you control is relative to the camera's perspective. This approach helps to build the scene in a more cinematic way and creates a tension or highlights specific elements in the scene, such as characters or puzzles.
But it will also be very frustrating. The first major boss battle is a battle with a humanoid scorpion demon, which is located in the middle of a large room. Instead of setting the camera in the corner so that the entire space is easy to see, the camera has two cameras that can only see half of each at a time. As you cross the invisible limits of the partition area, the camera angles switch and disorient you. Worse, bosses often retreat to the blind spot of any camera trying to show combat action.
On the one hand, this camera mode can present some beautiful pictures and truly cinematic actions. But on the other hand, it can also be incredibly frustrating, and it's obvious why this style of game design is mostly abandoned now.
But this is definitely not a fatal drawback, it is part of the charm of the game. "Ghost Warrior 2" is obviously a PS2 game, even in a remake. I mean, it is very deliberately and explicitly designed to be what it is now, with no extra content. For me, this is a good thing.
"Ghost Warrior 2" has smooth and fast movements, and the game does a great job of gradually improving the movements you can accomplish. I appreciate that it is relatively simple at first, but soon you can use critical strikes, charge attacks and more. It took me a little while to master the shoulder key locking posture for smoother rotation and dodging, then block and attack to break the enemy.
My trial covered the first few hours of the game, so I saw quite a lot of content. This is not just a vertical slice, but a full version of the game.
As for the changes made in the remake, most of them are what you expect. You can switch the aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9, which is great, but the game looks very clear at full widescreen, so I don't know why you're playing it at 4:3 unless it's for a few minutes of novelty experience.
All resources, including character models, visual effects, backgrounds, cutscenes, and even UI are fully updated for HD displays. They also added a gallery of artwork and music to fans of the series.
However, the most exciting update for long-time fans of Ghost Warrior is probably the addition of the difficulty of “Hell Mode”, which is available from the start. In this difficulty mode, taking any damage will result in immediate death, reloading the game you saved for the last time. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can complete the game this way.
Of course, there are other difficulties, and even simple modes, as well as new autosave and the ability to quickly switch weapons without opening a menu. This is very convenient and greatly facilitates mixing your play style more frequently.
This is a textbook-style remake of a game that is over 20 years old. It's exactly the same as the original game, except for some new difficulty options, higher resolution, optional widescreen support and autosave. This seems to me, this is the ideal way to do a remake because it preserves and improves the experience without sacrificing its features.
Of course, if you don't like early 2000s games that have some cliché elements, soaring difficulty and less desirable UI features, this may be hard to accept. But if you experience Ghost Warrior 2 with an open mind and understanding that it is a product of an era, you may have a very interesting experience.
However, I may be completely wrong. Maybe the rest of the game isn't as playable or lost its luster. Maybe the battle becomes boring and completing it is as painful as a tooth extraction. Fortunately, we don't have to wait too long to know.
The remake of "Ghost Warrior 2: The Destiny of the Warrior" will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Switch platforms on May 23. You can buy it separately or you can buy a dual-version set with the first game's remake, Ghost Warrior: Overlord. Even if the game has no narrative connection, if you have archived data for "Ghost Warrior: Overlord", you will get extra decorative costumes in "Ghost Warrior 2".
