Pikachu On Ice: Pokémon Teams Up With Olympic Skater In Adorable Skating Program
Pikachu hits the ice! A new partnership between Pokémon and the Japan Skating Federation is bringing the electric mouse and his icy friends to skating rinks across Japan. This exciting initiative marks the first time Pikachu will grace the ice in an official capacity (outside of a 1999 anime episode).
Retired Olympic skater Satoko Miyahara will join Pikachu in a graceful skating performance, starting May 11th. While Miyahara handles the majority of the skating, Pikachu adds its own adorable charm to the routine.
Pokémon Encourages Young Skaters
This collaboration isn't just about cuteness; it aims to inspire young Pokémon fans to take up ice skating. Ice-type Pokémon mascots will visit skating rinks nationwide, cheering on children in beginner skating classes. Kids can skate alongside their favorite Pokémon, fostering a fun and encouraging learning environment.
Pokémon Skate Challenge: Level Up Your Skills!
Participating skating rinks will offer children a free "Pokémon Skate Challenge: Aim for a Triple Axel" booklet. This booklet transforms learning to skate into a fun game, with 52 challenges ranging from putting on skates to mastering spins. Each completed skill earns a sticker of an Ice-type Pokémon, and skaters can collect badges to mark their progress from beginner to advanced levels. The ultimate goal? Completing the Ice-type Pokédex within the booklet!
A Japan-Only Event?
Sadly, the Pokémon Skate Challenge is likely to remain exclusive to Japan, mirroring many other unique Pokémon collaborations in the country. While some collaborations reach Western audiences, these often focus on broader appeal, as seen in past collaborations with artists like Post Malone and Katy Perry. Japan, on the other hand, often sees larger-scale events, such as entire Pokémon-themed trains. While Western fans may miss out on skating with Pikachu, the promotional video offers a delightful glimpse into this exciting Japanese event.
