Using Your Domain with a Netlify-Hosted Site

Netlify's official documentation provides comprehensive technical details on custom domains. However, this guide offers a simpler, more practical approach based on your current situation and goals.

Don't Own Your Domain Yet?

You can conveniently purchase a domain directly through Netlify for seamless integration. This simplifies setup considerably. However, you're not obligated to do so; you can register your domain with any provider and still use Netlify.

  • Simplest Option: Register your domain via Netlify.
  • Alternative: If you anticipate future hosting changes or require DNS flexibility (e.g., using a different provider later), registering your domain with a provider independent of Netlify offers greater control. While Netlify allows DNS management and redirection, consolidating domain management in one location often simplifies things.

Already Own Your Domain?

The remainder of this guide addresses this scenario.

Point Nameservers to Netlify?

This is the optimal method, offering the best CDN performance and eliminating subdomain complexities. Access your domain registrar's DNS settings and update the nameservers to Netlify's. The specific process varies depending on your registrar.

Can't or Don't Want to Point Nameservers to Netlify?

This is often due to using a proxy service like Cloudflare for enhanced performance and security. While Netlify offers many of these benefits, you might require specific Cloudflare features. In this case, you have two choices:

  • Use a CNAME record: Point the www subdomain (or your root domain if you don't mind using www) to Netlify using a CNAME record. You can subsequently remove the www prefix if desired (CNAME flattening).
  • Use an A record: Point the A record to Netlify's load balancer IP address. Refer to Netlify's documentation for the current IP address to ensure accuracy.

Using a Subdomain?

This is the easiest scenario. Assuming you already own the domain, retain your current DNS host. Simply create a CNAME record for your subdomain, pointing it to your Netlify domain. For example, if your root domain is hosted elsewhere and uses Cloudflare DNS, you can use a CNAME to point a Netlify-hosted subdomain.

If you wish to maintain the Netlify domain with the same content, implement a redirect. You might also need to temporarily disable the Cloudflare proxy (gray cloud) for those subdomains to allow Netlify to issue SSL certificates.
