The Semantics of Jamstack

The term "Jamstack" has sparked lively debate lately, as its definition expands to encompass newer applications. My previous article, "Static vs. Dynamic vs. Jamstack: Where’s The Line?", offered my perspective on defining Jamstack. This piece explores Jamstack's evolution and its impact on the term's meaning.

Static site creation predates the "Jamstack" label. Early adoption often involved simple blogs or open-source documentation hosted on GitHub Pages. While some pioneers tackled larger commercial projects, this wasn't the norm.

Static sites were once viewed as outdated—a relic of the 90s. The question arose: why would modern companies embrace this seemingly antiquated approach? Phil Hawksworth's insightful IJS talk highlighted the ambiguity: "Are we talking about a static experience, or a static architecture?"

This ambiguity, particularly for non-developers, is problematic. Modern static sites differ significantly from their 90s counterparts. Several key technological advancements have revitalized static site development:

  • JavaScript's evolution into a powerful browser-based application language (Gmail's 2004 launch exemplifies its early impact).
  • Static Site Generators (SSGs), pioneered by Jekyll in 2008, introduced dynamic capabilities like content separation and layout management.
  • CDNs, once exclusive to large corporations, became readily accessible and affordable thanks to services like AWS Cloudfront (launched in 2008).
  • Git workflows and associated CI/CD tools replaced error-prone FTP deployments.
  • A thriving ecosystem of tools provides added functionality to static sites, including search, e-commerce, databases, and commenting systems.

Jamstack redefined the perception of static websites. Matt Biilmann coined the term in 2016, capturing the advantages of modern static sites without the negative connotations of "static." Cassidy Williams aptly summarized Jamstack's essence: "Jamstack builds web applications like mobile apps: the UI is compiled, and data is fetched as needed."

Jamstack resonated strongly with WordPress developers, offering a refreshing simplicity and control compared to complex theming and plugin APIs. A community emerged around Jamstack's decoupled architecture.

As Jamstack gained popularity, project scale and complexity increased. Jamstack principles extended beyond websites into web applications, pushing the boundaries of what static sites could achieve. Platforms introduced features and workflows to accommodate larger, more complex applications using Jamstack principles.

The challenge lies in the lack of consensus on Jamstack's meaning. While concise definitions exist, the term's application to increasingly dynamic behaviors is causing division within the community. This ambiguity risks undermining the very purpose for which the term was created.

The overlap between the original and evolved interpretations of Jamstack creates a difficult problem. While I appreciate applying Jamstack principles to more dynamic approaches, simply creating new terms like "Jamstack " would likely exacerbate confusion.

Matt Biilmann's observation regarding Netlify's Distributed Persistent Rendering (DPR) is insightful: "For any technology, the hardest part is not establishing simplicity, but protecting it over time."

This resonates deeply. The flexibility of Jamstack is crucial. If a project grows or requires dynamic features, options should exist. Without these options, Jamstack would be relegated to small-scale applications. However, overemphasizing dynamic solutions risks losing the elegant simplicity that fueled the Jamstack movement.

DPR is a significant advancement, elegantly addressing the limitations of pre-building large sites. For a site with 100,000 pages, the trade-off of pre-building a subset and building others on demand is a worthwhile optimization.

DPR's position within the Jamstack framework requires careful consideration. Its inclusion or exclusion has significant implications. Sean Davis's definition resonates: "Jamstack is an architecture for atomically building and delivering precompiled, decoupled front-end web projects from the edge." Adapting this to include DPR requires modification. The official Jamstack definition, however, accommodates DPR well.

The evolution of the official Jamstack definition is noteworthy. The inclusion of "serverless" reflects its increasing accessibility to front-end developers, but it potentially conflicts with the core principles of pre-rendering and decoupling. Do these core principles need updating?

The future of Jamstack presents several possibilities:

  1. Retention of the original meaning (pre-rendering and decoupling), with separate terminology for more dynamic approaches.
  2. Expansion of the definition and principles, potentially leading to increased ambiguity.
  3. Jamstack as a community-driven set of guidelines, lacking strict rules.
  4. Jamstack transcending the "static" label, allowing for distinctions between static, hybrid, and dynamic websites.
  5. Jamstack becoming so mainstream that it's simply considered "modern web development."

The diverse perspectives within the community necessitate consensus and a clear path forward. Otherwise, a blend of options 3, 4, and 5 is likely. The passion surrounding Jamstack is undeniable, and the innovations are exciting. What's needed is agreement on a way forward.
