I'm refining my personal website—a sort of HD remaster, if you will. It's not a complete redesign, more a cleanup, and Polypane is proving invaluable. I previously raved about Polypane on my blog (March 2023), mentioning how I constantly discover new features. That's still true as of August 2024.
For the uninitiated, Polypane is a developer-focused web browser offering numerous advantages. Its standout feature is the multi-pane display, showcasing your project across various viewport sizes.
Rather than list every Polypane feature (Kilian Valkhof, the creator, does a great job of that!), I'll highlight a recent discovery.
Polypane's sidebar includes several informative tabs. The Meta tab, for instance, is perfect for previewing social media snippets. But the Outline tab is my current focus.
At first glance, it's simple: Polypane generates outlines for headings, landmarks, links, images, focus order, and even the full accessibility tree. This quickly reveals obvious errors, but Polypane goes further.
Enabling the Show issues option uncovers less apparent problems. The Landmarks view also offers a Show potentials option, highlighting elements that could function as page landmarks. These outline views also provide page overlays, visually highlighting element locations.
I initially explored these Outline tab features while debugging a focus order issue. Switching to the "Focus order" outline, I discovered an overlay option for the focus order itself.
This generated a visual map of my page's focus order, proving incredibly helpful for troubleshooting and visualizing keyboard navigation.
Polypane is packed with these small but powerful features.
When I shared my discovery with Kilian, his reply was, "Everything’s there when you need it!" I can confirm that's absolutely true.
