On the Ground at Frostapalooza

Witnessing Jeremy Keith's performance of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps" at Frostapalooza was entirely unexpected, a testament to the event's unpredictable nature.

A Night of Music and Charity

Web design luminary Brad Frost, author of Atomic Design and a remarkably talented bassist, celebrated his birthday with a unique benefit concert featuring his family, friends, and fellow musicians.

Held at Pittsburgh's Mr. Smalls Theatre, Frostapalooza was an all-ages event donating 100% of proceeds to two worthy causes: NextStep Pittsburgh (supporting spinal cord injury rehabilitation) and Project Healthy Minds (dedicated to mental health research and resources).

Diverse Musical Performances

The evening's eclectic setlist spanned diverse genres, encompassing songs by Fleetwood Mac, Radiohead, David Bowie, and many more. A Spotify playlist featuring all 31 tracks is available for your listening pleasure.

The highlight for me was a breathtaking rendition of Pink Floyd's "Money," a performance that rivaled any I could have hoped for from the legendary band themselves, complete with all instrumental sections.

Joining Brad on stage was Chris Coyier, founder of CSS-Tricks, who added his banjo skills to tracks like Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" and The Band's "The Weight," both executed flawlessly.

The stage backdrop showcased dynamic visuals from CodePen demos created by the CodePen community. Explore the Frostapalooza tag on CodePen to see the projected artwork.

Brad's interpretation of Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" resonated perfectly with the evening's atmosphere, proving a memorable moment.

A Gathering of Web Talent

Many of the musicians contributing to Frostapalooza are web designers and developers who've collaborated with Brad throughout his career. The event felt like a reunion of the CSS world's elite.

Brad's family and members of his other bands, including Elby Brass, also participated, showcasing impressive musical prowess. Seeing a tuba-playing lead vocalist was a first for me!

The full lineup is accessible on the event's website. However, a screenshot is included here for convenience.

Capturing the Memories

Mike Aparicio's YouTube video of a collaborative jam session on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a must-see. Brian Kardell also captured a fantastic shot of Chris performing "The Weight."

Brad Frost generously shared additional photos from the event in a Google Photos album.

A Night to Remember

Frostapalooza was a fantastic celebration of music, friendship, and generosity. Happy birthday, Brad, and thank you for creating such a memorable event!
