Generative AI continues its integration into our digital lives, and Google's latest move brings the Gemini AI chatbot to Gmail on Android and iOS. Access Gmail Q&A:
This feature is currently exclusive to paid Google Workspace subscribers and Google One AI Premium plan users. To access Gmail Q&A:
- Open Gmail on your Android or iOS device (not available on the web).
- Locate the Gemini logo (a small black star) in the top right corner, next to the search bar. Tap it.
- A pop-up window appears with a prompt box and suggestions.
Alternatively, tap the Gemini icon within an individual email thread or the "Summarize this email" link (if visible). All your queries are kept in a single activity list, stored locally on your device. You can rate responses, copy text, and clear your history using the provided icons within the pop-up panel.
Google explains that Gmail Q&A can answer specific email questions, display unread messages, summarize emails on a topic, and even answer general search queries—all within your inbox.
Putting Gmail Q&A to work:
Gmail Q&A's capabilities are extensive. The more detail you provide in your query, the better the results. Try prompts like: "Summarize emails from the last week" or "Show me unread emails from [email address]". More complex queries, such as "What hotel did I book in Hackney?", also yielded accurate results in testing. Each response includes a "Sources" link to verify the AI's information.
Remember, AI can sometimes produce inaccurate results. Always double-check important information by reviewing the source emails.
